Abstract

A cognitive platform is disclosed that is configured for either or both of assessing or enhancing the cognitive abilities of an individual based on implementing one or more navigation task(s) in an environment. A first task is rendered that requires the individual to rely on allocentric navigation capabilities to navigate in the environment based on a first set of views of portions of the environment rendered at the user interface. A second task is rendered that requires the individual to rely on egocentric navigation capabilities to navigate in the environment. An indication of a cognitive ability in the individual can be generated based on the difference in the individual's performance at the first task as compared to the second task.

Core Innovation

The invention is an apparatus and system for generating an assessment of one or more cognitive skills in an individual using a cognitive platform that renders virtual navigation tasks. A first task requires allocentric navigation based on a first set of views of portions of a virtual environment, including an elevated view of a virtual landscape with an internal course and obstacles. The task requires controlling a guidable element from an initial point on the internal course to a target point and avoiding the obstacles.

A second task requires egocentric navigation based on a second set of views of portions of the virtual environment, including a localized view of the virtual landscape with the internal course and obstacles. The second task similarly requires controlling the guidable element from the initial point to the target point and avoiding the obstacles without benefit of an aerial view of the entire course or a specified portion of the course. The platform generates a first set of data from measured parameters associated with allocentric navigation and generates a second set of data from measured parameters associated with egocentric navigation.

The invention analyzes the first set of data and the second set of data to generate an output of a quantitative metric of performance at the first task and the second task. The quantitative metric includes a measure of a degree of optimization of a path navigated through the internal course. The platform compares the first set of data and the second set of data to performance data for a plurality of individuals in a known disease population to generate an indication of cognitive ability based on the metric and the comparison.

Claims Coverage

Independent claim set covers an apparatus and a system that assess cognitive skills using paired allocentric and egocentric virtual-navigation tasks, measuring navigation parameters, generating a quantitative performance metric including a degree of path optimization, comparing to performance data in a known disease population, and generating an indication of cognitive ability. Three inventive features are present across the provided claim excerpts.

Paired allocentric and egocentric virtual navigation tasks for cognitive assessment

Render a first task requiring allocentric navigation based on first set of views, and render a second task requiring egocentric navigation based on second set of views; the first task presents an elevated view with an internal course and obstacles, and the second task presents a localized view with the internal course and obstacles, requiring control of a guidable element to move from an initial point to a target point while avoiding obstacles, with the egocentric task performed without benefit of an aerial view of the entire course or a specified portion.

Generate data from measured navigation parameters for each task

Generate a first set of data based on measurements of one or more parameters associated with allocentric navigation performed in response to the first task, and generate a second set of data based on measurements of one or more parameters associated with egocentric navigation performed in response to the second task.

Quantitative performance metric including degree of path optimization

Analyze the first set of data and the second set of data to generate an output of a quantitative metric of the individual's performance at the first task and the second task, wherein the quantitative metric comprises a measure of a degree of optimization of a path navigated by the individual through the internal course.

Compare to known disease population performance data and generate cognitive ability indication

Compare the first set of data and the second set of data to a plurality of performance data for a plurality of individuals in a known disease population, where the plurality of performance data comprises performance data for the first task and the second task; and generate an indication of cognitive ability based on the quantitative metric and the comparison to the plurality of performance data for the plurality of individuals.

Iterative virtual navigation enhancement with automatically updated views

Iteratively perform, in a series of at least two iterations, rendering at least two tasks requiring navigation in a virtual environment based on one or more views automatically updated as the individual navigates; receive navigation commands, control navigation based on the received commands; measure first and second sets of parameters indicating allocentric and egocentric navigation capabilities, analyze at least a portion of the first and second sets to generate a quantitative metric including degree of optimization of a path through the internal course, compare to performance data for a plurality of individuals in a known disease population, and generate an indication of cognitive ability.

Across the independent claims provided, the core inventive structure is paired allocentric and egocentric virtual navigation, measurement of navigation parameters with data outputs for each task, computation of a quantitative metric including degree of path optimization, comparison to plurality performance data for individuals in a known disease population, and generation of an indication of cognitive ability; the enhancement claim further requires iterative task rendering with automatically updated views and control based on navigation commands.

Stated Advantages
