Abstract
Techniques to leverage computer monitor and graphics card hardware capabilities, using DCI-P3 and rec2020 color spaces for medical imagery are provided. The technique involves downloading the original raw source pixel data from the medical image from the webserver to the browser. A window and level transform is then applied to the raw pixel data enabling it to be displayed using the web browser capable of leveraging the hardware capabilities of commodity monitors and video cards that are capable of high bit depth display.
Core Innovation
The invention provides a method for rendering a medical image in a web browser by obtaining raw pixel data from a medical image, receiving values indicative of window and level settings, and applying a window and level transform. The transform linearly maps pixel values within a defined window of pixel values to a range between 0 and 1 while clamping pixel values outside the window, and a result buffer is obtained based on the application of the window and level transform.
The method generates an image data object based on the result buffer and optional parameters for color space and pixel format, and the image is rendered in a web browser based on the generated image data object. The described approach uses optional parameters such as DCI-P3 color space and rec2020 color space and pixel format options.
The described pipeline addresses display of high-bit-depth medical images, such as mammography, in a web-browser context. It includes obtaining raw pixel data, applying window and level control via the window and level transform, and generating browser-renderable image data.
Claims Coverage
The document includes three independent claims: a method claim, a system claim, and a nontransitory processor-readable storage medium claim. Across these claims, the inventive features are obtaining raw pixel data, receiving window and level settings, applying a window and level transform with linear mapping and clamping, generating an image data object with optional parameters, and rendering in a web browser.
Window and level transform with linear mapping and clamping
Applying a window and level transform that linearly maps each pixel value of the raw pixel data that falls within a window of pixel values to a respective value in a range between 0 and 1 and clamps each pixel value of the raw pixel data that falls outside the window of pixel values, based on the received values indicative of window and level settings for the raw pixel data.
Browser renderable image data object with optional color space and pixel format
Generating an image data object based on the result buffer and optional parameters for color space and pixel format.
Web-browser rendering of the generated image data object
Rendering an image in a web browser based on the generated image data object.
Obtaining raw pixel data from a medical image
Obtaining raw pixel data from a medical image.
Receiving window and level settings indicative values
Receiving values indicative of window and level settings for the raw pixel data.
All independent claims are directed to a web-browser rendering pipeline for medical images that uses window and level settings to transform raw pixel data into a result buffer, then generates an image data object with optional color space and pixel format parameters and renders the image in a web browser.
