Abstract
A collection system configured to maintain the integrity of a bodily fluid sample has a proximal end portion, a distal end portion, and an inner surface defining a fluid flow path therethrough. The distal end portion is configured to be placed in fluid communication with a patient. The proximal end portion is configured to be placed in fluid communication with a fluid reservoir. The fluid flow path defined by the inner surface is associated with at least one flow characteristic configured to limit a stress within the flow of the bodily fluid between the distal end portion and the proximal end portion.
Core Innovation
The invention is a device for procuring a blood sample with reduced damage from a patient to reduce inaccurate results in testing of the blood sample. The device includes a first adapter configured to be placed in fluid communication with the patient and defining a first lumen, and a second adapter configured to be placed in fluid communication with a fluid reservoir and defining a second lumen.
A third adapter is coupled between the first adapter and the second adapter. The third adapter defines a distal lumen having a distal diameter substantially equal to the first diameter and a proximal lumen having a proximal diameter substantially equal to the second diameter, and includes a medial portion forming a plurality of chambers disposed between the distal end portion and the proximal end portion.
The chambers collectively define an inner volume in fluid communication with the distal lumen and the proximal lumen, where the inner volume alternately increases or decreases between smaller and larger cross-sectional areas with continuous curvature. The plurality of chambers facilitate laminar flow of the blood sample through the inner volume of the third adapter and are operable to reduce a negative pressure within a portion of the fluid flow path distal to the third adapter.
Claims Coverage
Independent claim clm-00001 recites a blood-sample procurement device with a first adapter, a second adapter, and a third adapter with a plurality of chambers that create alternating cross-sectional area changes with continuous curvature to facilitate laminar flow and reduce negative pressure distal to the third adapter. Dependent claims further refine the linkage to reduced blood-sample damage and inaccurate results, and specify chamber-centered diameter and semi-spherical chamber features.
Multiple-adapter blood-sample procurement with coupled distal and proximal lumens
A device including a first adapter defining a first lumen to be placed in fluid communication with the patient, a second adapter defining a second lumen to be placed in fluid communication with a fluid reservoir, and a third adapter coupled between the first adapter and the second adapter, the third adapter defining a distal lumen substantially equal to the first diameter and a proximal lumen substantially equal to the second diameter.
Alternating cross-sectional area inner volume with continuous curvature laminar flow
The third adapter medial portion forms a plurality of chambers defining an inner volume in fluid communication with the distal and proximal lumens, where the cross-sectional area of the inner volume alternately increases or decreases between smaller and larger cross-sectional areas along the longitudinal centerline with continuous curvature, and the chambers are configured to facilitate laminar flow through the inner volume.
Reducing negative pressure distal to the third adapter to reduce damage
The plurality of chambers are operable to reduce a negative pressure within a portion of the fluid flow path distal to the third adapter, thereby reducing damage to the blood sample and inaccurate results in testing of the blood sample.
Chamber-centered inner-volume diameter greater than adapter lumen diameters
The diameter of the inner volume of the third adapter, measured substantially in the center of each chamber along the longitudinal centerline, is greater than both the first diameter and the second diameter.
Semi-spherical chamber portions
The plurality of chambers include proximal and distal chamber portions configured as semi-spherical portions of the third adapter.
The claim set centers on a chambered third adapter connected between first and second adapters, with a continuously curved, alternating cross-sectional-area inner volume that facilitates laminar flow and reduces negative pressure distal to the third adapter. Dependent features further specify reduced blood-sample damage and inaccurate results, chamber-centered diameter relationships, and semi-spherical chamber portions.
