Abstract

A cannulated retrograde reamer configured to be disposed over a guidewire that is adjustable to create tunnels of multiple different diameters. The cannulated retrograde reamer substantially reduces the risk of tunnel malposition and/or misalignment, and can be adjusted to create a range of tunnel diameters, thereby allowing inventory levels to be reduced for a surgical case.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a cannulated retrograde reamer for drilling a bone tunnel in a surgical site. The retrograde reamer includes a first tubular shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis, and a second tubular shaft moveably disposed about the proximal end of the first tubular shaft.

At least one cutting member has a proximal end and a distal end that is pivotably coupled to the distal end of the first tubular shaft. The cutting member has an arcuate shape that conforms to an outer surface of the first tubular shaft in a closed position, and in the closed position an outer surface of the at least one cutting member extends in-line with an outer surface of the second tubular shaft.

The retrograde reamer is introduced into the surgical site by disposing the first tubular shaft over a guide wire. The second tubular shaft is moved relative to the first tubular shaft, and in response the cutting member is displaced from the closed position to an open position, thereby defining at least one cutting diameter for the bone tunnel.

Claims Coverage

The partial content provides one independent claim directed to a method of drilling a bone tunnel using a cannulated retrograde reamer. The claim includes three inventive features.

Guide-wire disposed first tubular shaft and retrograde introduction

The method introduces the retrograde reamer into the surgical site by disposing the first tubular shaft over a guide wire.

Moveable second tubular shaft relative to first tubular shaft

The retrograde reamer includes a second tubular shaft moveably disposed about the proximal end of the first tubular shaft, and moving the second tubular shaft relative to the first tubular shaft is performed.

Pivotably coupled arcuate cutting member defining a cutting diameter

At least one cutting member is pivotably coupled to the distal end of the first tubular shaft, and the arcuate cutting member is displaced from a closed position to an open position, thereby defining at least one cutting diameter.

Overall, the independent claim coverage centers on drilling a bone tunnel retrogradely using a guide-wire supported first tubular shaft, a second tubular shaft movable about the proximal end, and arcuate cutting members pivotably displaced from a closed in-line configuration to an open cutting configuration to define at least one cutting diameter.
