Abstract

Embodiments are generally directed apparatuses, methods, techniques and so forth determine an access level of operation based on an indication received via one or more network links from a pod management controller, and enable or disable a firmware update capability for a firmware device based on the access level of operation, the firmware update capability to change firmware for the firmware device. Embodiments may also include determining one or more configuration settings of a plurality of configuration settings to enable for configuration based on the access level of operation, and enable configuration of the one or more configuration settings.

Core Innovation

The invention describes a cloud computing system for providing at least one cloud-based service associated with execution of at least one workload, configurable for use with remote rack server resources that communicate with the cloud computing system via optical communication links and at least one switch. The cloud computing system includes compute resources and storage resources comprised in at least one cloud computing server and management resources configured to allocate the compute, storage, and remote rack server resources. The workload is implemented using at least one virtual machine workload and/or at least one virtualization environment.

The system includes at least one optical fiber-based network communicatively coupling certain compute resources and certain storage resources with the remote rack server resources through the optical communication links and the at least one switch, with the remote rack servers remote from the cloud computing server. The management resources obtain rack server resource utilization data from the remote rack server resources for use in allocating the remote rack server resources.

The management resources dynamically reallocate, based upon past resource utilization data, resource utilization prediction data, and machine-learning, the compute resources, the storage resources, and/or the remote rack server resources for execution of the at least one workload. The at least one switch processes communication in accordance with multiple link-layer protocols that are different from each other, at least in part.

In some configurations, the system uses telemetry data for capacity planning and/or management of the compute resources, storage resources, and/or remote rack server resources.

Claims Coverage

The document contains three independent claims (clm-00001, clm-00006, and clm-00011). Across these independent claims, there are five main inventive features.

Optical fiber-based network coupling via multi-protocol switching

An optical fiber-based network communicatively couples certain compute resources and certain storage resources with remote rack server resources via optical communication links and at least one switch that processes communication in accordance with multiple link-layer protocols, wherein the multiple link-layer protocols are different from each other, at least in part.

Virtual machine workload via virtualization environment

The workload comprises at least one virtual machine workload and/or is implemented using at least one virtualization environment.

Management allocation using remote rack utilization data

Management resources are configurable to obtain rack server resource utilization data from the remote rack server resources for use in allocating the remote rack server resources.

Machine-learning-driven dynamic reallocation using utilization history and prediction

Management resources are configurable to dynamically reallocate, based upon past resource utilization data, resource utilization prediction data, and machine-learning, the compute resources, the storage resources, and/or the remote rack server resources for use in the execution of the at least one workload.

Telemetry for capacity planning and/or management

The management resources are configurable to use telemetry data from the compute resources, the storage resources, and/or the remote rack server resources in capacity planning and/or management of those resources.

Overall, the claims cover a cloud computing system, machine-readable instructions, and a method in which management allocates and dynamically reallocates compute, storage, and remote rack server resources for virtualized workload execution over optical communication links with multi-protocol switch processing, using remote utilization data and machine-learning based reallocation driven by past utilization and prediction data. Telemetry-based capacity planning and management is also expressly stated.
