Abstract

A wireless sensor measures properties of a substance and transmits the properties to a remote wireless receiver. The wireless sensor can be fully enclosed within a container containing the substance, allowing remote monitoring of the properties of the substance without compromising integrity of a closed system.

Core Innovation

The invention provides a submersible device for measuring a light characteristic in which a sealed case is configured to be submerged into a liquid. The sealed case at least partially contains and/or is attached to a battery, a magnet for stabilizing the case, an optics board, and an LED emitter configured to emit an output light. The output light passes through a first lens and then a second lens before reaching a photodiode.

The photodiode detects a magnitude of light to determine an absorbance of the output light by a test substance. The device includes a wireless transmitter configured to transmit output relating to the absorbance, enabling measurement output to be sent without relying on a wired connection. The structure is directed to optical absorbance measurement while the device remains sealed for submersion.

In dependent refinements described with the invention, a reagent delivery device and a reagent are provided in or attached to the sealed case, and dispensing can be controlled based on data measured by and transmitted from the submersible device. Additional refinements include an optical filter in or attached to the case to filter output light directed to the photodiode, and further sensor elements such as a temperature sensor and a pH sensor included within or attached to the sealed case.

Claims Coverage

The provided independent claim covers a sealed, submersible optical absorbance measurement device using LED illumination through first and second lenses, photodiode magnitude detection to determine absorbance, and a wireless transmitter to transmit output relating to absorbance. Dependent refinements add reagent delivery and control, optical filtering, and temperature and pH sensing.

Sealed submersible case with stabilization magnet and power

A sealed case configured to be submerged into a liquid; wherein the case at least partially contains and/or is attached to a battery and a magnet for stabilizing the case.

LED optics with first and second lenses

An optics board and an LED emitter configured to emit an output light, a first lens configured for the output light to pass through after being emitted by the LED emitter, and a second lens configured for the output light to pass through after passing through the first lens.

Photodiode-based absorbance determination

A photodiode configured to detect a magnitude of light and determine an absorbance of the output light by a test substance.

Wireless transmission of absorbance-related output

A wireless transmitter configured to transmit output relating to the absorbance.

Reagent delivery inside or attached to the sealed case

A reagent delivery device and a reagent, wherein the reagent delivery device is included in and/or attached to the sealed case.

Dispensing controlled based on transmitted absorbance-related data

A reagent delivery device that dispenses a reagent based on data measured by and transmitted from a submersible device.

Optical filter for light directed to the photodiode

A filter in or attached to the case that filters output light directed to the photo diode.

Temperature sensing within or attached to the sealed case

A sealed case that further at least partially contains and/or is attached to a temperature sensor.

pH sensing within or attached to the sealed case

A sealed case that at least partially contains and/or has attached to it a pH sensor.

Overall claim coverage centers on a sealed, submersible device that measures absorbance using LED illumination through two lenses and photodiode magnitude detection, then wirelessly transmits absorbance-related output. Dependent claims further add reagent delivery and dispensing controlled by transmitted measurement data, and refine the optical path with a filter while optionally adding temperature and pH sensors.
