Abstract

An antimicrobial composition comprising (i) an effective amount of a first antimicrobial agent consisting of at least one solvent which is a compound according to Formula 1: wherein R1 is a branched or unbranched, saturated or unsaturated, unsubstituted C3 to C5 alkyl chain or a C3 alkyl chain substituted with a methoxy group; (ii) at least one additional solvent (e.g. selected from the group consisting of ethanol, propanol, butanol, phenethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, cyclopentylmethanol, dimethyl adipate, dimethyl succinate, ethylhexylglycerin, 2-butoxyethanol, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, butylene carbonate, glycerin carbonate, and butyl 3-hydroxybutyrate); and (iii) a diluent, q.s. to 100; wherein the antimicrobial composition is substantially free of peroxygen compounds, antibiotics, and chloroacetamide. Also described are methods of using the compound of Formula 1 and compositions containing same in the field of infection control and prevention.

Core Innovation

The disclosed invention relates to antimicrobial infection-control compositions containing a synergistic combination of compounds, including a compound according to Formula 1 and an effective amount of at least one solvent selected from a defined group. The compound according to Formula 1 is an antimicrobial agent in which R1 is a branched or unbranched, saturated or unsaturated, unsubstituted C3 to C5 alkyl chain or a C3 alkyl chain substituted with a methoxy group. In the compositions, the Formula 1 compound and the specified solvent act together to reduce the number of microbes on a surface.

The invention addresses the problem of reducing microbial load on surfaces by using a composition that achieves at least 50% microbial reduction after a contact time of 10 minutes. The compositions are further characterized as substantially free of peroxygen compounds, antibiotics, N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), N-ethyl pyrrolidone (NEP), and chloroacetamide. In certain compositions, additional antimicrobial agents are included as part of the antimicrobially synergistic combination.

The invention also includes embodiments where the synergistic combination comprises Formula 1 antimicrobial agent, one or more antimicrobial solvents, and citric acid and/or salts thereof. Optional additional antimicrobial agents include carboxylic acids and salts thereof, anionic, amphoteric, nonionic, and cationic surfactants, quaternary ammonium compounds, aldehydes, biguanides, mineral acids, phenols, glyceryl ethers, phenethyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, cyclopentylmethanol, dimethyl adipate, antimicrobial metals, and mildew removing agents.

Claims Coverage

The document contains two independent claims directed to antimicrobial compositions with antimicrobially synergistic combinations. Across these independent claims, the inventive features center on a Formula 1 antimicrobial agent, selected solvent(s) acting with the Formula 1 agent, a performance requirement of at least 50% microbial reduction after 10 minutes on a surface, and the composition being substantially free of specified undesired components, with one claim further incorporating citric acid/salts and enumerated solvent species and optional additional antimicrobial-agent sets.

Formula 1 antimicrobial agent with synergistic solvent selection

An antimicrobial composition with an antimicrobially synergistic combination consisting of a first antimicrobial agent consisting of at least one compound according to Formula 1 and an effective amount of at least one solvent selected from the group consisting of alcohols, dibasic esters, glyceryl ethers, and butyl 3-hydroxybutyrate.

At least 50% microbial reduction at 10-minute contact

The at least one compound according to Formula 1 is effective to reduce the number of microbes on a surface by at least 50% when an effective amount of the antimicrobial composition is applied to the surface for a contact time of 10 minutes.

Substantially-free of specified components

The antimicrobial composition is substantially free of peroxygen compounds, antibiotics, N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), N-ethyl pyrrolidone (NEP), and chloroacetamide.

Citric acid and enumerated antimicrobial solvents within the synergistic combination

In an antimicrobial composition, the antimicrobially synergistic combination further consists of citric acid and salts thereof and at least one solvent selected from the group consisting of ethanol, propanol, butanol, isopropyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, dimethyl succinate, ethylhexylglycerin, and butyl 3-hydroxybutyrate, with optional additional antimicrobial agent(s) from a specified group.

Across both independent claims, the inventive core is an antimicrobial composition defined by an antimicrobially synergistic combination of a Formula 1 antimicrobial agent and specified solvent(s), together with a required performance outcome of at least 50% microbe reduction after 10 minutes on a surface. The claims also require the composition to be substantially free of peroxygen compounds, antibiotics, NMP, NEP, and chloroacetamide, with one claim specifically incorporating citric acid/salts and enumerating particular solvent species and optional additional antimicrobial-agent sets.

Stated Advantages

Reduces the number of microbes on a surface by at least 50% after a contact time of 10 minutes.

Documented Applications

Antimicrobial infection-control compositions applied to a surface, including hard-surface and hand-soap formats.
