Abstract
An antimicrobial composition comprising (i) an effective amount of a first antimicrobial agent consisting of at least one compound according to Formula 1:wherein R1 is a branched or unbranched, saturated or unsaturated, unsubstituted C3 to C5 alkyl chain or a C3 alkyl chain substituted with a methoxy group; (ii) (optionally) an effective amount of at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, and cationic surfactants; and (iii) a diluent, q.s. to 100; wherein the antimicrobial composition is substantially free of peroxygen compounds, antibiotics, and chloroacetamide. Also described are methods of using the composition in the field of infection control and prevention.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to C3-C5 N-alkyl-gamma-butyrolactams, defined by Formula 1 in which R1 is a branched or unbranched, saturated or unsaturated, unsubstituted C3 to C5 alkyl chain or a C3 alkyl chain substituted with a methoxy group, including N-butyl-gamma-butyrolactam, N-isobutyl-gamma-butyrolactam, and N-methoxypropyl-gamma-butyrolactam. The N-alkyl-gamma-butyrolactams are used in an antimicrobial composition to act as antimicrobial agents and solvents, either as part of a formulation or to provide antimicrobial performance in combination with other formulation components.
The core innovation provides an antimicrobially synergistic combination comprising a compound according to Formula 1, an effective amount of at least one surfactant selected from a specified group, and optionally at least one additional antimicrobial agent selected from a defined group. The composition includes a diluent q.s. to 100 and is configured so that the Formula 1 compound is effective to reduce microbes on a surface by at least 50% after application for a contact time of 10 minutes.
The document further addresses the reduction of the number of microbes on a surface, including hard-to-kill mycobacteria, by applying an antimicrobial composition for a defined contact time. It states that antimicrobial activity can be insufficient when only a single antimicrobial type is used, motivating a synergistic formulation approach, and reports antimicrobial action against mycobacteria with ASTM E2197-02.
Claims Coverage
The claims coverage identifies one independent claim and several dependent claims. The independent claim requires a synergistic antimicrobial composition with a Formula 1 C3-C5 N-alkyl-gamma-butyrolactam, a selected surfactant set, and an optional additional antimicrobial agent, together with a diluent and specified exclusion requirements, and a performance threshold of at least 50% microbial reduction after 10 minutes.
Antimicrobially synergistic combination of Formula 1, surfactant, and optional additional antimicrobial agent
An antimicrobial composition comprising an antimicrobially synergistic combination of: a compound according to Formula 1 with R1 defined as a branched or unbranched, saturated or unsaturated, unsubstituted C3 to C5 alkyl chain or a C3 alkyl chain substituted with a methoxy group; an effective amount of at least one surfactant selected from the listed anionic sulfuric acids, anionic sulfonic acids, anionic carboxylic acids, quaternary ammonium compounds, amine oxides, alcohol ethoxylates, N,N-dimethyl C8-C10 alkylamides, and N,N-dimethyl 9-decenamide and their corresponding salts or acids; and optionally at least one additional antimicrobial agent selected from carboxylic acids and salts thereof, phenols, aldehydes, biguanides, mineral acids, hypochlorites, glyceryl ethers, terpenes, essential oils, antimicrobial metals, and mildew removing agents.
Diluent, performance threshold, and specified exclusions
An antimicrobial composition further comprising a diluent, q.s. to 100; wherein the at least one compound according to Formula 1 is effective to reduce the number of microbes on a surface by at least 50% when an effective amount of the antimicrobial composition is applied to the surface for a contact time of 10 minutes; and wherein the composition is substantially free of peroxygen compounds, antibiotics, N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), N-ethyl pyrrolidone (NEP), and chloroacetamide.
The key inventive structure is the synergistic antimicrobial combination of a Formula 1 C3-C5 N-alkyl-gamma-butyrolactam with a defined surfactant group and optionally an additional antimicrobial agent, formulated with a diluent and constrained by exclusions, while meeting a performance threshold of at least 50% microbial reduction after 10 minutes on a surface.
Stated Advantages
Reduces the number of microbes on a surface by at least 50% when applied for a contact time of 10 minutes.
Provides synergistic antimicrobial improvements when combined with selected surfactants and additional antimicrobial agents, including improved activity against hard-to-kill mycobacteria as reported using ASTM E2197-02.
Documented Applications
Reducing microbial load on contaminated surfaces by applying the antimicrobial composition for a stated contact time.
Infection control and prevention use cases are referenced as an application setting for the antimicrobial compositions.
