Abstract
A system for collecting a physiological sample includes a dermal patch configured for attaching to a subject's skin and an applicator for coupling to the dermal patch. The dermal patch includes a reservoir configured to store a processing fluid, a sample collection chamber for receiving the processing fluid and a physiological sample extracted from a subject. The applicator includes at least one actuating lever for activating the dermal patch to receive the physiological sample from the subject and directing the physiological sample into the sample collection chamber.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to a dermal patch system for collecting a physiological sample from a subject. The system includes a housing with a needle configured to move between an undeployed position and a deployed position, and in the deployed position the needle is configured to draw a physiological sample from the subject. The system further includes a reservoir that stores a processing fluid and a chamber configured to receive the processing fluid and the drawn physiological sample.
A lever is configured to move between an undeployed position and a deployed position such that a transition of the lever from the undeployed position to the deployed position releases the processing fluid from the reservoir and moves the needle to the deployed position. The released processing fluid and the drawn physiological sample are received in the chamber, and the processing fluid and the drawn physiological sample are handled in a manner that enables delivery toward formation of a processed physiological sample for storage.
In additional embodiments, the system includes a storage element configured to absorb the drawn physiological sample, with the storage element optionally defined by a filter paper matrix. An applicator is configured to removably couple to the dermal patch and includes the lever that causes the needle to move to the deployed position to draw the physiological sample. The system can further include a sample collection chamber that holds the storage element and a physiological fluid channel configured to transport the physiological sample to the sample collection chamber.
Claims Coverage
The provided portion includes two independent claims. Across both independent claims, the main inventive elements are a needle that moves between undeployed and deployed positions, a lever transition that coordinates needle actuation and processing-fluid release or delivery, and a storage element that absorbs the drawn physiological sample.
Lever-driven needle actuation with processing-fluid release into a chamber
A housing that includes a needle configured to move between an undeployed position and a deployed position, wherein the needle is configured to draw a physiological sample from the subject in the deployed position; a reservoir that stores a processing fluid; a chamber configured to receive the processing fluid and the drawn physiological sample; and a lever configured to move between an undeployed position and a deployed position such that a transition of the lever from the undeployed position to the deployed position releases the processing fluid from the reservoir and moves the needle to the deployed position.
Removably coupled applicator and storage-element delivery of the drawn sample
A dermal patch configured to attach to the skin of the subject, including a needle configured to move between an undeployed position and a deployed position, wherein the needle is configured to draw a physiological sample from the subject in the deployed position, and a storage element configured to absorb the drawn physiological sample; and an applicator configured to removably couple to the dermal patch, including a lever configured to move between an undeployed position and a deployed position such that a transition of the lever from the undeployed position to the deployed position causes the needle to move to the deployed position to draw the physiological sample and facilitate delivery of the drawn physiological sample to the storage element.
Both independent claims cover a dermal patch system in which a lever transition from an undeployed position to a deployed position causes coordinated needle movement to draw a physiological sample. One independent claim additionally coordinates processing-fluid release from a reservoir into a chamber configured to receive both the processing fluid and the drawn physiological sample, and the other additionally centers on a storage element that absorbs the drawn physiological sample with an applicator removably coupled to the dermal patch.
