Abstract
An injection system includes a molded body member having a body connection member at a distal end of the molded body member. The system also includes a needle hub assembly coupled to the distal end of the molded body member. The needle hub assembly includes a needle hub coupled to the body connection member of the molded body member, a needle coupled to the needle hub, and a barbed band disposed around a proximal end of the needle hub and having a barb. The barbed band allows rotation of the needle hub assembly relative to the body connection member in a first direction, while preventing rotation of the needle hub assembly relative to the body connection member in a second direction.
Core Innovation
An injection system is provided with a molded polymer body member having a body connection member at a distal end, and a needle hub assembly coupled to the distal end. The needle hub assembly includes a needle hub coupled to the body connection member, and a needle coupled to the needle hub. The system further includes a separately formed metal barbed band disposed around a proximal end of the needle hub.
The separately formed metal barbed band has an integrally formed barb and an integrally formed longitudinal extension received in an opening in the needle hub to prevent relative rotation of the metal barbed band and the needle hub. The metal barbed band allows rotation of the needle hub assembly relative to the body connection member in a first direction while preventing rotation in a second direction by the barb digging into the molded polymer body member.
The disclosure also encompasses anti-removal retention configurations implemented as one-way clutch mechanisms that prevent unintended removal or unthreading after molding and shipping while permitting controlled rotational movement. In addition, injection is described as safe injection operation in which a plunger drives a stopper to a distal position to trigger needle latch release, and a spring-driven needle retraction member retracts the needle into a safe configuration.
Claims Coverage
The provided claim content includes one independent claim defining an injection system with a molded polymer body and a needle hub assembly secured by a separately formed metal barbed band implementing a one-way anti-removal and anti-rotation clutch. Dependent claim content further refines the anti-rotation structure and adds injection and centering or safe-retraction features.
Separately formed metal barbed band with integrally formed barb and longitudinal extension
A separately formed metal barbed band coupled to and disposed around a proximal end of the needle hub, the metal barbed band having an integrally formed barb and an integrally formed longitudinal extension configured to be received in an opening in the needle hub to prevent relative rotation of the metal barbed band and the needle hub.
One-way rotational control via barb digging into the molded polymer body member
The metal barbed band allows rotation of the needle hub assembly relative to the body connection member in a first direction, while preventing rotation of the needle hub assembly relative to the body connection member in a second direction by the barb digging into the molded polymer body member.
Needle hub assembly coupled to distal body connection member
A molded polymer body member having a body connection member at a distal end of the molded polymer body member, and a needle hub assembly coupled to the distal end of the molded polymer body member, the needle hub assembly comprising a needle hub coupled to the body connection member of the molded polymer body member, and a needle coupled to the needle hub.
Plunger and stopper-driven needle retraction for safe injection operation
A stopper member within a molded polymer body and a plunger member coupled to the stopper, where manipulating the plunger retracts the needle at least partially into the molded polymer body to position the stopper at the distal end of the molded polymer body.
Molded polymer body member formed from cyclic olefin copolymer or cyclic olefin polymer
The molded polymer body member is made from Cyclic Olefin Copolymer (COC) or Cyclic Olefin Polymer (COP).
The claim coverage centers on an injection system where a separately formed metal barbed band with an integrally formed barb and longitudinal extension creates one-way rotational control relative to the molded polymer body connection, preventing rotation in one direction by barb engagement. The other claim content adds plunger and stopper operation for needle retraction and safe injection, and specifies the molded body material as COC or COP.
Stated Advantages
Prevents unintended unthreading or removal after molding and shipping by using anti-removal and one-way clutch mechanisms.
Improves needle centering by including seal and guide structures with an inward extension to center the needle or tube in the luer opening, reducing misalignment errors.
Enables safe injection operation by triggering needle latch release and spring-driven needle retraction into a safe configuration.
Documented Applications
Injection system operation including safe injection where a plunger drives a stopper to trigger needle latch release and spring-driven needle retraction into a safe configuration.
