Abstract
The invention regards a device for reconstituting a bioactive agent and forming a flowable paste, the device comprising: —a base configured for receiving: —a first container containing a liquid, and —a second container containing the bioactive agent, —a syringe containing a paste forming material, the syringe being attachable to the base, wherein the base has a first conduit for fluidly connecting the first container with the second container and a second conduit for fluidly connecting the second container with the syringe, and wherein the first container is configured to be pressurizable such that when the first and second containers are received at the base, the liquid is forced through the first conduit into the second container, thereby reconstituting the bioactive agent, and the reconstituted bioactive agent is forced through the second conduit into the syringe, such that a paste is formed.
Core Innovation
The invention provides a device for reconstituting a bioactive agent and forming a paste in a base by using a first container containing a liquid and a second container containing the bioactive agent. The base is configured to receive both containers and includes a first conduit for fluidly connecting the first container with the second container and a second conduit for fluidly connecting the second container with a syringe containing paste forming material. In this arrangement, the liquid is forced through the first conduit into the second container, thereby reconstituting the bioactive agent.
After reconstitution, the reconstituted bioactive agent is forced through the second conduit into the syringe so that a paste is formed. The first container is configured to have positive pressure energy stored such that, when the first and second containers are received at the base, the stored pressure energy drives the sequential forcing of liquid into the second container and then forcing the reconstituted bioactive agent into the syringe.
The described concept includes configuring the pressure energy as stored positive pressure energy in a first container, and provides embodiments in which the device is used to obtain reconstitution and paste formation by a single-step, spontaneous sequence. The paste is represented as a medical paste, notably a haemostatic paste, with examples including lyophilized thrombin as the bioactive agent and biocompatible, cross-linked gelatin particles as paste forming material.
Claims Coverage
The patent includes two independent claims: one for a device and one for a method. The device claim specifies a container-and-conduit system configured for pressurized reconstitution followed by paste formation in an attachable syringe, while the method claim specifies the corresponding fluid-connection and forcing sequence between the first container, the second container, and the syringe. Across the independent claims, there are main inventive features centered on stored positive pressure energy, conduit-based fluid transfer, reconstitution of a bioactive agent, and paste formation in a syringe containing paste forming material.
Conduit-connected reconstitution and paste formation in an attachable syringe
A device comprising a base with a first conduit fluidly connecting a first container of liquid with a second container of the bioactive agent, and a second conduit fluidly connecting the second container with a syringe containing paste forming material, wherein the liquid is forced through the first conduit into the second container to reconstitute the bioactive agent and the reconstituted bioactive agent is forced through the second conduit into the syringe such that a paste is formed.
Stored positive pressure energy in the first container
The device wherein the first container is configured to have positive pressure energy stored such that when the first and second containers are received at the base, the liquid is forced through the first conduit into the second container for reconstitution and then the reconstituted bioactive agent is forced through the second conduit into the syringe to form the paste.
Fluidly connecting first and second containers with a syringe to force sequential transfer
A method comprising providing a first container containing a liquid configured to have positive pressure energy stored, providing a second container containing the bioactive agent, providing a syringe containing paste forming material, and fluidly connecting the first container with the second container and fluidly connecting the second container with the syringe such that the liquid is forced from the first container into the second container to reconstitute the bioactive agent and the reconstituted bioactive agent is forced from the second container into the syringe such that a paste is formed.
Claim coverage centers on driving a sequential process—liquid transfer for reconstitution followed by forcing the reconstituted bioactive agent into a syringe to form a paste—using stored positive pressure energy in a first container and conduit-based fluid connections between the first container, second container, and syringe.
