Abstract

The present invention relates to methods for remotely and intelligently tuning movement disorder of therapy systems. The present invention still further provides methods of quantifying movement disorders for the treatment of patients who exhibit symptoms of such movement disorders including, but not limited to, Parkinson's disease and Parkinsonism, Dystonia, Chorea, and Huntington's disease, Ataxia, Tremor and Essential Tremor, Tourette syndrome, stroke, and the like. The present invention yet further relates to methods of remotely and intelligently or automatically tuning a therapy device using objective quantified movement disorder symptom data and/or brain activity mapped data to determine the therapy setting or parameters to be transmitted and provided to the subject via his or her therapy device. The present invention also provides treatment and tuning intelligently, automatically and remotely, allowing for home monitoring of subjects.

Core Innovation

The invention provides a treatment or therapy system for a subject having a movement disorder. The system is adapted to reduce severity and/or occurrence of movement disorder symptoms and/or side effects of the subject's movement disorder treatment or therapy. It includes a brain activity measurement component that measures brain activity during at least a first and second time periods and a movement disorder diagnostic device with at least one movement sensor adapted to measure symptoms and/or side effects during each of the at least first and second time periods, substantially simultaneously with the brain activity measurement.

A processor calculates quantification of severity of the subject's movement disorder symptoms and/or side effects during each of the at least first and second time periods substantially simultaneously with the measurement. A correlation algorithm determines the brain activity that minimizes the measured symptoms and/or side effects by correlating the measured symptoms and/or side effects and the first and second severity quantifications with the simultaneously measured brain activity to map the part(s) of the subject's brain responsible for the symptoms and/or side effects.

A tuning algorithm is trained based on the determined brain activity that minimizes the measured symptoms and/or side effects, and calculates a suggested set of treatment or therapy parameters based at least in part on the measured brain activity, the calculated quantifications of severity, and measured symptoms and/or side effects. An interface automatically changes or enables manual changing of parameters based at least in part on the first and/or second time period quantifications, and suggested or approved parameters are entered automatically or manually into the treatment or therapy device so that the treatment or therapy device provides treatment based on approved parameters.

Claims Coverage

The independent claims are clm-00001, clm-00008, and clm-00015. Across these independent claims, four main inventive features set the claim scope: simultaneous measurement and severity quantification, correlation-based mapping of brain parts that minimize symptoms and/or side effects, a trained tuning algorithm for suggested treatment or therapy parameter sets, and automatic or manual entry of approved or suggested parameters into the treatment or therapy device.

Simultaneous brain activity measurement with time-period movement-severity quantification

A treatment or therapy system includes a brain activity measurement component adapted to measure a subject's brain activity during at least a first and second time periods, a movement disorder diagnostic device comprising at least one movement sensor adapted to measure the subject's movement disorder symptoms and/or side effects during each of the at least first and second time periods, and at least one processor comprising at least one quantification algorithm adapted to calculate a quantification of severity of the movement disorder symptoms and/or side effects during each time period substantially simultaneously with the measurement.

Correlation-based mapping of brain parts that minimize symptoms and/or side effects

A correlation algorithm comprised in the at least one processor or an additional processor is adapted to determine the brain activity that minimizes the measured symptoms and/or side effects by correlating the measured symptoms and/or side effects and the first and second quantifications of severity with the simultaneously measured brain activity to map the part(s) of the subject's brain responsible for the symptoms and/or side effects.

Trained tuning algorithm for suggested therapy parameter sets

A tuning algorithm comprised in the at least one processor or the additional processor is trained based on the determined brain activity that minimizes the measured symptoms and/or side effects, and is adapted to calculate a suggested set of treatment or therapy parameters based at least in part on the measured brain activity, the calculated quantifications of severity, and measured symptoms and/or side effects.

Automatic or manual entry of approved or suggested treatment or therapy parameters

The interface of the treatment or therapy device is adapted to automatically change or enable manual changing of parameters based at least in part on the first and/or second time period quantifications, and is further adapted to automatically enter or to enable manual entering of approved treatment or therapy parameters, or the suggested set of treatment or therapy parameters, into the treatment or therapy device such that the treatment or therapy device provides treatment or therapy to the subject based on the approved or suggested parameters.

Across the independent claims, the system architecture is defined by simultaneous measurement of brain activity and movement-related symptom or side-effect severity across at least first and second time periods, correlation-based mapping of brain parts that minimize symptoms and/or side effects, and a trained tuning algorithm that computes suggested treatment or therapy parameter sets. The claims further require an interface to automatically change and/or to enable manual entering of approved or suggested parameters into the therapy device for providing treatment.

Stated Advantages

Reduces severity and/or occurrence of a subject's movement disorder symptoms and/or side effects of treatment or therapy of the subject's movement disorder.
