Abstract
A large lumen guide catheter has an elongate tubular body, which has an outer surface, an inner surface, and a braided wire layer between the inner surface and the outer surface, wherein the wires winding a first helical direction are thicker and wider than the wire winding in a second helical direction opposite the first helical direction.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to a guide catheter having an elongate tubular body with an outer diameter, an inner diameter of no less than 0.0715 inches (1.8161 mm), a proximal end, a distal end, and a total length therebetween. A sole reinforcement tubular structure is embedded in polymer between the outer diameter and the inner diameter, extending from the proximal end to proximal to the distal end. The reinforcement is made solely of a first plurality of elongate wire members and a second plurality of elongate wire members braided together in a braid configuration.
Each of the first plurality of elongate wire members is arranged in a counterclockwise helix about a central longitudinal axis of the elongate tubular body and has a first constant transverse cross-sectional shape with a maximum thickness and a maximum width, where the maximum width is between three times and four and a half times the maximum thickness. Each of the second plurality of elongate wire members is arranged in a clockwise helix about the central longitudinal axis and has a second constant transverse cross-sectional shape with a maximum thickness and a maximum width, where the maximum width is between two times and three times the maximum thickness. The braid configuration is 2-over, 2-under.
In another formulation, the braid pics per inch (ppi) is constant and has a value between 65 and 75 ppi. In yet another formulation, the guide catheter specifies an outer diameter of no more than 0.0835 inches (2.1209 mm) together with the inner diameter range, and a braided reinforcement layer embedded in polymer consists of 16 wire members braided in a 2-over, 2-under pattern. In that formulation, eight of the wire members have a first rectangular thickness and width set, and the other eight have a second rectangular thickness and width set.
Claims Coverage
The patent includes three independent claims (clm-00001, clm-00013, clm-00019). Across them, the main claim coverage is concentrated on an embedded sole reinforcement tubular structure formed solely by two pluralities of helically arranged wire members braided in a 2-over, 2-under configuration, with specified transverse wire cross-sectional relationships and, in one independent claim, specified braid density (65–75 ppi) or, in another, specified outer/inner diameter limits and specific rectangular wire thickness/width sets.
Embedded sole reinforcement tubular structure braided from two helical wire pluralities
A guide catheter comprising an elongate tubular body with an outer diameter, an inner diameter of no less than 0.0715 inches (1.8161 mm), a proximal end, a distal end, and a total length therebetween; and a sole reinforcement tubular structure embedded in polymer between the outer diameter and the inner diameter of the elongate tubular body from the proximal end of the elongate tubular body to proximal to the distal end of the elongate tubular body, the sole reinforcement tubular structure made solely of a first plurality of elongate wire members and a second plurality of elongate wire members braided together in a braid configuration.
Counterclockwise and clockwise helical wire members with defined width-to-thickness relationships in a 2-over, 2-under braid
Each of the first plurality of elongate wire members is arranged in a counterclockwise helix about a central longitudinal axis of the elongate tubular body and has a first constant transverse cross-sectional shape, the first cross-sectional shape having a maximum thickness and a maximum width, the maximum width being between three times and four and a half times the maximum thickness; and each of the second plurality of elongate wire members is arranged in a clockwise helix about the central longitudinal axis of the elongate tubular body and has a second constant transverse cross-sectional shape, the second cross-sectional shape having a maximum thickness and a maximum width, the maximum width being between two times and three times the maximum thickness; wherein the braid configuration is 2-over, 2-under.
Fixed braid density of 65–75 ppi for the 2-helical braided reinforcement
A guide catheter comprising an elongate tubular body with an outer diameter, an inner diameter of no less than 0.0715 inches (1.8161 mm), and a sole reinforcement tubular structure embedded in polymer, the sole reinforcement tubular structure made solely of a first plurality of elongate wire members and a second plurality of elongate wire members braided together in a braid configuration; wherein each of the first plurality of elongate wire members is arranged in a counterclockwise helix and each of the second plurality is arranged in a clockwise helix; and wherein a braid pics per inch (ppi) is constant and is a value between 65 and 75 ppi.
Small outer/inner diameter range with a 16-wire 2-over, 2-under braided reinforcement and defined rectangular wire sets
A guide catheter comprising an elongate tubular body with an outer diameter of no more than 0.0835 inches (2.1209 mm), an inner diameter of no less than 0.0715 inches (1.8161 mm), a proximal end, a distal end, and a total length therebetween; and a braided reinforcement layer embedded in polymer between the outer diameter and the inner diameter of the elongate tubular body from the proximal end of the elongate tubular body to the distal end of the elongate tubular body; wherein the braided reinforcement layer consists of 16 wire members, braided in a 2-over, 2-under pattern, where 8 of the 16 wire members have transverse cross-sectional rectangular shape having a 0.002 inch thickness and a 0.005 inch width, and the other 8 of the 16 wire members have a transverse cross-sectional rectangular shape having a 0.001 inch thickness and a 0.004 inch width.
Overall, the independent claims cover a guide catheter in which the reinforcement is solely formed by two braided pluralities of helically arranged wire members embedded in polymer, with a 2-over, 2-under braid. The independent claims further define the helix directions, constant transverse cross-sectional shape relationships, and either specify braid density (65–75 ppi) or specify outer/inner diameter limits together with a 16-wire arrangement and defined rectangular wire thickness/width sets.
