Abstract

A flue for use with an ultrasonic surgical tip, comprising protrusions or bumps on its inner surface with improved protrusion pattern, density and location. The flue has enhanced cooling effect for the ultrasonic surgical tip.

Core Innovation

A flue for an ultrasonic surgical apparatus includes an internal surface with an arcuate region and a plurality of protrusions. The plurality of protrusions form a bridge that limits contact with the arcuate region of the internal surface of the flue. The protrusions are distributed in staggered rows and columns so that one protrusion is centered in relation to every four adjacent protrusions arranged in a substantially square or rectangular manner.

The flue further includes a first flue extender portion and a second flue extender portion extending distally from the first flue extender portion. The second flue extender portion has a higher density of the plurality of protrusions than the first flue extender portion. The internal surface in each extender portion includes an arcuate region defining an inner diameter, with the protrusions projecting inwardly to define a smaller inner diameter in the second extender portion.

In the ultrasonic surgical apparatus, the flue is configured to be disposed about the external surface of the ultrasonic horn. The plurality of protrusions form a bridge that limits contact between the arcuate region of the internal surface of the flue and the external surface of the ultrasonic horn. The disclosed implementation provides a flue geometry that includes spherical protrusions with specified spherical radius ranges and a bridge-limiting contact arrangement across the extender portions.

Claims Coverage

The independent claims are clm-00001, clm-00006, and clm-00012. Across these claims, the patent focuses on 5 main inventive features: a bridge-forming flue internal surface with an arcuate region; staggered row/column protrusion distribution; two-part (first and second) distal flue extender portions with a smaller second inner diameter; a relative increase in protrusion density in the second extender portion; and inwardly projecting spherical protrusions with specified spherical radius ranges.

Bridge-forming flue internal arcuate region

The internal surface includes an arcuate region and a plurality of protrusions, wherein the plurality of protrusions form a bridge that limits contact with the arcuate region of the internal surface of the flue.

Staggered protrusion rows and columns lattice

The plurality of protrusions are distributed in staggered rows and columns such that one protrusion is centered in relation to every four adjacent protrusions arranged in a substantially square or rectangular manner.

Two flue extender portions with higher distal protrusion density

A first flue extender portion and a second flue extender portion extending distally from the first flue extender portion, wherein the second flue extender portion has a higher density of the plurality of protrusions than the first flue extender portion.

Reduced second inner diameter created by inward protrusions

The internal surface of each one of the first flue extender portion and the second flue extender portion includes an arcuate region defining a first inner diameter and a plurality of protrusions projecting inwardly from the arcuate region defining a second inner diameter, wherein the second inner diameter is smaller than the first inner diameter.

Inward spherical protrusions with specified radius ranges

The plurality of protrusions of the first flue extender portion have a spherical radius in the range of 0.01 inches to 0.10 inches and the plurality of protrusions of the second flue extender portion have a spherical radius in the range of 0.01 inches to 0.08 inches.

Flue disposed around ultrasonic horn with contact limiting bridge

A flue having an internal surface extending between a proximal end and an opposing distal end, wherein the flue is configured to be disposed about the external surface of the ultrasonic horn, and wherein the plurality of protrusions form a bridge that limits contact between the arcuate region of the internal surface of the flue and the external surface of the ultrasonic horn.

The independent claims collectively cover a flue and an ultrasonic surgical apparatus in which an internal arcuate region is paired with inward protrusions that form a bridge limiting contact. The claims require staggered rows and columns of protrusions, two extender portions with a higher protrusion density in the distal portion, a smaller second inner diameter created by inward protrusions, and spherical protrusions with specified radius ranges.

Stated Advantages

Limits contact between the arcuate region of the internal surface of the flue and the external surface of the ultrasonic horn.

Documented Applications

Ultrasonic surgical apparatus including an ultrasonic horn and a flue for ultrasonic aspiration.
