Abstract

A medical device providing a combination of thermal and DVT therapies to a patient. The components, arrangement of components, function of the device as a whole, and methods of use of the device are all devised to maximize therapeutic effectiveness. Effectiveness in this context is measured by the ability to provide a controlled application of the recommended thermal treatment including time, temperature, compression, and number of cycles with specified cycle duration.

Core Innovation

The invention provides a portable therapeutic thermal compression device that combines a temperature system with a compression system and a control system. The temperature system includes a heating/cooling assembly having an upper plate, a center plate, and a lower plate, with a first thermoelectric module (TEM) interposed between the upper and center plates and a second TEM interposed between the center plate and the lower plate.

The device further includes a radiator portion that is separate from the temperature system and connected to a fluid tank. The device circulates a liquid through the radiator portion and the temperature system without passing through the fluid tank, and the liquid is heated or cooled by the TEMs by passing the liquid through the heating/cooling assembly of the temperature system.

The invention also includes an air compression system that is connected to a thermal compression garment, with control of air pressure delivered to the garment. The device delivers a first temperature to the garment for a first temperature duration and a second temperature for a second temperature duration, and delivers a first pressure to the garment for a first pressure duration and a second pressure to the garment for a second pressure duration.

Claims Coverage

The provided material includes two independent claims, a device claim and a method claim. The inventive features center on a temperature system architecture using dual TEMs with a specific plate arrangement and an external radiator connected to a fluid tank, together with a method that selects and connects garments to a fluid temperature system and an air compression system while delivering first and second temperature and pressure levels for respective durations.

Dual TEM heating/cooling assembly with upper, center, and lower plates

A temperature system comprising a heating/cooling assembly having an upper plate, a center plate, and a lower plate, with a first TEM interposed between the upper and center plates and a second TEM interposed between the center and lower plates.

Separate radiator portion connected to a fluid tank with bypass circulation

A radiator portion separate from the temperature system and connected to a fluid tank, with a liquid circulated through the radiator portion and the temperature system without passing through the fluid tank.

Liquid heated or cooled by TEMs through the heating/cooling assembly

The liquid is heated or cooled by the TEMs by passing the liquid through the heating/cooling assembly of the temperature system.

Therapeutic thermal compression by garment selection, temperature and air connection, and timed delivery

A method of providing a patient with therapeutic thermal compression that includes selecting a thermal compression garment; connecting the garment to a fluid temperature system and an air compression system; controlling the temperature of the fluid to the garment; controlling the air pressure to the garment; delivering a first temperature for a first temperature duration and a second temperature for a second temperature duration; and delivering a first pressure for a first pressure duration and a second pressure for a second pressure duration.

Overall, the independent claim coverage centers on a therapeutic thermal compression device using a dual TEM heating/cooling assembly with an upper, center, and lower plate arrangement and a separate radiator portion for liquid circulation, and a corresponding method that selects a thermal compression garment, couples it to both a fluid temperature system and an air compression system, and delivers first and second temperature and pressure levels for respective durations.
