Abstract

A personal blockchain is generated as a cloud-based software service in a blockchain environment. The personal blockchain immutably archives usage of any device, perhaps as requested by a user. However, some of the usage may be authorized for public disclosure, while other usage may be designated as private and restricted from public disclosure. The public disclosure may permit public ledgering by still other blockchains, thus providing two-way public/private ledgering for improved record keeping. Private usage, though, may only be documented by the personal blockchain.

Core Innovation

A cloud-based blockchain service receives device usage information together with a privacy parameter and a device identifier. The service receives a first service request that includes first usage information, the privacy parameter, and the device identifier, and receives a second service request that includes second usage information and the device identifier. The service determines a chain identifier corresponding to the device identifier and determines whether each service request comprises the privacy parameter.

The service generates hash values of the first and second usage information by hashing the usage information using a hashing algorithm. The service generates a first data record associated with the device identifier that comprises the first hash value and a first indication that the first usage information is private, and generates a second data record associated with the device identifier that comprises the second hash value and a second indication that the second usage information is public. The service records the first data record and the second data record to a personal blockchain associated with the device identifier.

Based on determining that the second service request does not comprise the privacy parameter, the service generates a third data record that comprises the second usage information and adds the third data record to a block associated with the device identifier. The service records the block to a public blockchain by adding the block to a chain of blocks associated with the chain identifier. In response to the first service request and the second service request, the service sends service responses that include information of what was recorded in the personal blockchain and, for the second service request, also what was recorded in the public blockchain.

Claims Coverage

The partial content includes two independent claims, a method and a system. Both claims center on selectively recording device usage information across a personal blockchain and a public blockchain using hash values, privacy parameter determination, and device- and chain-associated blockchain recording, with responses indicating the recorded results.

Selective privacy-parameter blockchain recording across personal and public blockchains

A cloud-based blockchain service receives device usage information in a first and a second service request, determines whether the privacy parameter is present, generates hash values and privacy/public indications in data records, records the data records to a personal blockchain, and conditionally generates and records additional data to a public blockchain based on determining that the second service request does not comprise the privacy parameter.

Device identifier and chain identifier-based blockchain association

The service determines a chain identifier corresponding to the device identifier, associates a block with the device identifier, and records the block to a public blockchain by adding the block to a chain of blocks associated with the chain identifier.

Hash-based personal blockchain records with privacy/public indications and dual responses

The service generates first and second data records comprising hash values and indications that usage information is private or public, records those data records to a personal blockchain associated with the device identifier, and sends responses in which the first response includes information of recording the first hash value in the personal blockchain while the second response includes information of recording the second hash value in the personal blockchain and recording the second usage information in the public blockchain.

Across both independent claims, the inventive coverage is the cloud-based selective ledgering mechanism that uses privacy-parameter determination, hashing, and privacy/public indications to record to a personal blockchain while conditionally recording usage content to a public blockchain, with blockchain association via device and chain identifiers and responses reflecting what was recorded.
