Abstract
Systems and methods for a six-primary color system for display. A six-primary color system increases the number of primary colors available in a color system and color system equipment. Increasing the number of primary colors reduces metameric errors from viewer to viewer. The six-primary color system includes Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta primaries. The systems of the present invention maintain compatibility with existing color systems and equipment and provide systems for backwards compatibility with older color systems.
Core Innovation
The invention provides a system and method for a multi-primary color system, specifically implementing a six-primary color system that utilizes Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta as primaries in display technology. This system expands the number of available primary colors beyond traditional RGB, with associated image data, acquisition, conversion, and display subsystems. A key aspect involves generating image data with an imager camera system using a Bayer pattern optical filter, processing this data through an image data converter, and enabling calculation of the magenta primary value by a serial data decoder.
The background identifies that prior art RGB displays and enhancements for wider color gamuts result in limitations, such as increased metameric errors between viewers and higher power consumption. Existing multi-primary systems either process additional colors only internally to the display or lack a comprehensive workflow for acquisition, transport, and processing of additional color primaries. The problem being solved is the inability of traditional and previous multi-primary color systems to provide a comprehensive, compatible workflow for capturing, converting, and displaying a true multi-primary (six-primary) color system and reducing viewer-to-viewer color discrepancies.
The system includes a mechanism to convert image data for display using at least one image data converter, and optionally modifies a set of Session Description Protocol (SDP) parameters based on the image conversion process. The architecture allows for the calculation of the magenta primary value by the decoder, enabling the creation of a set of converted image data for use with display devices capable of rendering the multi-primary color system. The invention also covers improvements in handling bit levels of image data, managing electronic luminance components, and the use of digital interfaces for encoding and decoding within a networked workflow.
Claims Coverage
There are three independent claims in this patent, each defining inventive features related to a multi-primary color display system.
Imager camera system with Bayer pattern optical filter and magenta calculation by serial data decoder
A system comprising: - An imager camera system that includes a Bayer pattern optical filter - A set of image data generated using the imager camera system - An image data converter operable to convert the set of image data for display on at least one display device - Calculation of a magenta primary value by a serial data decoder - Creation of a set of converted image data after conversion by the image data converter
System with modifiable Session Description Protocol (SDP) parameters and magenta value calculation
A system comprising: - An imager camera system with a Bayer pattern optical filter - A set of image data generated by the imager camera system - An image data converter - A set of Session Description Protocol (SDP) parameters that are modifiable - Calculation of a magenta primary value by a serial data decoder - The image data converter operable to convert the set of image data for display on at least one display device
System with transfer function, modifiable SDP parameters, and magenta calculation
A system comprising: - An imager camera system with a Bayer pattern optical filter - A set of image data generated using the imager camera system - An image data converter - At least one transfer function (TF) for processing the set of image data - A set of Session Description Protocol (SDP) parameters that are modifiable - Calculation of a magenta primary value by a serial data decoder - The image data converter operable to convert the set of image data for display on at least one display device
In summary, the independent claims collectively cover systems utilizing an imager camera with a Bayer pattern optical filter, processing and converting image data—including the calculation of a magenta primary value by a serial data decoder—for multi-primary color systems, with optional integration of transfer functions and modifiable Session Description Protocol (SDP) parameters.
Stated Advantages
The six-primary color system extends current color gamuts to a wider usable color gamut than currently offered and minimizes metamerisms, allowing everyone to see the same color.
By doubling the number of primaries and making them wide spectrum, viewer metameric errors are reduced compared to systems using only RGB.
The system maintains compatibility and backwards compatibility with existing (legacy) color systems and equipment.
Documented Applications
Display technologies for rendering images using six (multi) primary color systems, including but not limited to applications such as LCD projectors, DLP projectors, OLED monitors, LCD monitors, Quantum Dot (QD) displays, and direct emissive assembled displays.
Image acquisition workflows, including cameras and camera systems capable of capturing and processing six-primary color information for generating image data compatible with the multi-primary color system.
