Abstract

A multiple carrier injection system includes an adapter, having at least one arm, and a pen needle assembly. The pen needle assembly includes a hub retaining a needle and a bullet having a cover to seal the bullet, where the bullet encloses the hub in a first position. The arm engages the adapter to the hub, and the arm causes the hub to rotate within the bullet to move the hub into a second position.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a multiple carrier injection system that includes an adapter including at least one arm and a pen needle assembly including a hub retaining a needle. The hub comprises a threaded external contour having at least one unthreaded cutout recessed from the threaded external contour, where the unthreaded cutout forms an outer leg and an inner leg at an outer surface of the hub. The inner leg is not threaded and the outer leg is threaded.

A bullet having a cover seals the bullet, and the bullet encloses the hub in a first position. The at least one arm engages the adapter to the at least one unthreaded cutout in the threaded external contour of the hub, and the at least one arm causes the hub to rotate within the bullet to move the hub into a second position. In the second position, the needle pierces a septum of a medication delivery pen through the needle.

The system also includes a magazine housing enclosing a plurality of pen needle assemblies. In the described use, the hub can be disengaged from the pen needle assembly, the hub removed after the medicament interaction, and medicament dispensed through the needle.

Claims Coverage

The document provides coverage for two independent claims: a system claim and a method claim. Across these independent claims, at least five main inventive mechanical features are repeatedly emphasized: adapter arms engaging unthreaded cutouts, a hub with a threaded external contour and unthreaded cutout forming outer and inner legs, a first-to-second hub position movement caused by hub rotation within a covered bullet, septum piercing via the needle in the second position, and medicament dispensing through the needle.

Adapter arm engagement to hub unthreaded cutouts

The at least one arm engages the adapter to the at least one unthreaded cutout in the threaded external contour of the hub, wherein the at least one unthreaded cutout forms an outer leg and an inner leg at an outer surface of the hub and the inner leg is not threaded and the outer leg is threaded

Rotationally driven first and second hub positions in a sealed bullet

the at least one arm causes the hub to rotate within the bullet to move the hub into a second position, the bullet having a cover to seal the bullet and enclosing the hub in a first position

Needle piercing the medication delivery pen septum in the second position

the needle pierces a septum of a medication delivery pen via the needle when the hub is in the second position

Medication dispensing method using adapter-to-hub engagement and hub removal

attaching an adapter to a medication delivery pen, engaging the adapter to a hub of a pen needle assembly, disengaging the hub from the pen needle assembly, removing the hub from the pen needle assembly, and dispensing medicament through the needle

Hub geometry with unthreaded cutout forming inner and threaded outer legs

the hub comprises a threaded external contour including at least one unthreaded cutout recessed from the threaded external contour, the at least one unthreaded cutout forms an outer leg and an inner leg at an outer surface of the hub; and the inner leg is not threaded and the outer leg is threaded

Covered pen needle assembly usage with hub disengagement

disengaging the hub from the pen needle assembly; piercing a septum of the medication delivery pen via the needle; removing the hub from the pen needle assembly

Collectively, the independent claims focus on an adapter-arm and hub engagement relationship where unthreaded cutouts on a hub are engaged by adapter arms to cause hub rotation within a sealed bullet from a first position to a second position, enabling needle piercing of a medication delivery pen septum and subsequent medicament dispensing, with the method further including disengaging and removing the hub.
