Abstract

Dry thawing systems and devices for thawing biological substances are provided herein. Methods for thawing biological substances are also provided.

Core Innovation

The invention is a dry thawing system and device for thawing an enclosed biological substance. The system includes a dry thawing chamber with a chamber frame and a chamber door, and heating assemblies that include heater plates and heating cushions. The heating cushions are deformable and can be fluid-filled, and the heating cushion body includes multi-layer barrier materials to prevent fluid and vapor egress and inhibit melting at hot spots.

The invention provides agitation associated with the heating assemblies. An agitator device pivots heating assemblies and/or a pivoting agitator plate to provide compressive agitation during dry thawing in the enclosed chamber. Temperature sensing is used for control, including contact temperature sensors and/or non-contact temperature sensors, with temperature information optionally associated with RFID and smart labels.

The invention controls heater temperature by stage-based, closed-loop feedback using measured temperatures and weight. The control includes a pre-heating stage, an ice stage, a liquid stage, and a standby stage, using stage-specific temperature set points and transition set point temperature detection based on temperature equality. Termination uses a final set point temperature, and the system includes maximum thawing time and standby-time monitoring. Safety functions include failsafe over-temperature shutdown using dedicated failsafe temperature sensors, BIT/POST self-test, door-closed confirmation, and operator notification with stop control.

Claims Coverage

Two independent claims are present. Across both independent claims, the core inventive features are weight- and temperature-based control of heater-generated temperature for thawing in a dry thawing device, and using temperature of at least a portion of a heating assembly together with enclosed biological substance temperature and weight to control the enclosed biological substance temperature.

Dry thawing with heating cushion, substance temperature, and weight-based heater control

receiving the enclosed biological substance in a dry thawing device comprising a heating cushion and a heater; measuring a temperature of the heating cushion; measuring a temperature of the enclosed biological substance; determining a weight of the enclosed biological substance; and controlling a temperature generated by the heater based upon the measured temperatures and the weight.

Dry thawing with biological substance temperature, heating assembly temperature, and weight-based control

determining a weight of the enclosed biological substance; determining a temperature of the enclosed biological substance; determining a temperature of at least a portion of a heating assembly within a thawing device; and controlling the temperature of the enclosed biological substance based upon the determined temperatures and weight.

The independent claims define thawing control of an enclosed biological substance in a dry thawing device using determined weight and temperatures. One claim additionally measures a heating cushion temperature, while the other determines temperature of at least a portion of a heating assembly within a thawing device, and both control the enclosed biological substance temperature or heater temperature based on those determined values.
