Abstract
A hernia repair device including a main body, a plurality of suture needle ports, a plurality of suture needles and a central shaft. The central shaft includes a retractable distal flange disposed at a distal end portion of the central shaft and defines a central channel extending through the main body. The suture needle ports are adjustable between a first configuration in which the suture needle ports are housed entirely within the main body and a second configuration in which the suture needle ports partially extend from the distal end portion of the main body. The suture needles are adjustable between a first configuration in which the suture needles are housed entirely within the suture needle ports and a plurality of second configurations in which the suture needles partially extend from distal end portions of the suture needle ports. A hernia repair mesh is attached to the plurality of suture needles.
Core Innovation
A hernia repair device is described that deploys a hernia mesh at an implantation site using adjustable, retractable components. The device includes a main body with a first longitudinally extending slot and a second longitudinally extending slot, each having a first widened portion forming a first locking slot and a second widened portion forming a second locking slot. A central shaft extends through the main body and defines a central channel extending through the main body, with a retractable distal flange at a distal end portion of the central shaft.
The distal flange is deployed and retracted using a pair of distal flange switches. Each distal flange switch has a first portion fixed to the central shaft and a second portion pivotally attached to the first portion and extending through a corresponding longitudinal slot, where the second portion includes a detent portion biased inward. The distal flange switch has a first locked configuration with the detent portion protruding into a first locking slot and a second locked configuration with the detent portion protruding into a second locking slot.
The device further includes a plurality of suture needle ports adjustable between a first configuration with ports housed entirely within the main body and a second configuration with ports partially extending from the distal end portion. Correspondingly, a plurality of suture needles is adjustable between a first configuration housed entirely within the suture needle ports and a plurality of second configurations with the needles partially extending from distal end portions of the suture needle ports. The hernia mesh is attached to the plurality of suture needles.
Claims Coverage
Independent claim clm-00001 sets out 1 main inventive concept: a main body having two longitudinal slots and locking slots, a central shaft with a retractable distal flange, detent-biased distal flange switches providing two locked configurations, and adjustable suture needle ports and suture needles with mesh attached.
Detent-biased distal flange switches deploying a retractable distal flange
A pair of distal flange switches fixed to and pivotally attached to a central shaft, with detent portion biased inward to define a first locked configuration protruding into a first locking slot and a second locked configuration protruding into a second locking slot, wherein adjustment from the first locked configuration to the second locked configuration deploys the distal flange and adjustment from the second locked configuration to the first locked configuration retracts the distal flange.
Longitudinal locking-slot main body for two flange switch positions
A main body comprising a first longitudinally extending slot and a second longitudinally extending slot, each including a first widened portion forming a first locking slot and a second widened portion forming a second locking slot, with the second locking slot disposed at a more distal position along the main body relative to the first locking slot.
Adjustable suture needle ports and adjustable suture needles with mesh attached
A plurality of suture needle ports adjustable between a first configuration housed entirely within the main body and a second configuration in which the suture needle ports partially extend from a distal end portion of the main body, and a plurality of suture needles adjustable between a first configuration housed entirely within the plurality of suture needle ports and second configurations in which the plurality of suture needles partially extend from distal end portions of the plurality of suture needle ports, wherein a hernia mesh is attached to the plurality of suture needles.
Central channel extending through the main body
A central shaft extending through the main body and defining a central channel extending through the main body.
The claim coverage is anchored by clm-00001’s combination of a main body with first and second longitudinal slots having widened locking portions, a central shaft with a retractable distal flange, detent-biased distal flange switches that lock in two configurations to deploy and retract the flange, and adjustable suture needle ports and suture needles with a hernia mesh attached.
