Abstract
A graphical user interface allowing one or more users to rapidly perceive and respond to varying operational states. Glyphs depicting differing levels of detail are provided for a top-level manager versus a lower-level operator. As applied to the vehicle paradigm, each individual glyph presents information as to the vehicle's current assigned task, mode, state, status, and its progress in completing that task. Each display shows multiple glyphs representing multiple vehicles. A vehicle in need of attention rises in the depiction whereas a vehicle not needing attention remains in a low position.
Core Innovation
The invention is a graphical user interface allowing one or more users to rapidly perceive and respond to varying operational states. Glyphs depicting differing levels of detail are provided for a top-level fleet manager versus a lower-level group operator, and each individual glyph presents information as to a vehicle's current assigned task, its progress in completing that task, and any alerts or concerns about the vehicle.
The patent addresses the limitation of existing graphical user interfaces in which the human operator must scan and monitor all vehicles equally and must constantly make selections to learn more information. A more helpful interface is required to intuitively alert the user to vehicles needing attention, which the present invention provides.
The invention further uses a motion-based depiction (the 'fish bowl analogy') in which glyphs needing attention rise toward the top of the display while glyphs needing no attention remain at the bottom, and the rate of change of position may be used to indicate the rate of change of urgency. Different glyph designs are provided for fleet manager and vehicle manager displays, with fleet manager glyphs conveying higher-level status and vehicle manager glyphs conveying more detailed progress and timing information.
Claims Coverage
This patent contains one independent claim with 5 main inventive features.
Graphical display
providing a graphical display
Representative glyph for each object
providing a representative glyph for each of said plurality of objects on said graphical display
Axis of motion
providing an axis of motion for said graphical display
Position linked to current degree of urgency
a position of each of said glyphs along said axis of motion is related to a current degree of urgency of said first parameter for each of said objects
Rate of motion linked to rate of change of urgency
a rate of motion of each of said glyphs along said axis of motion is related to a current rate of change of said degree of urgency of said first parameter for each of said objects
The independent claim requires a graphical display populated with a representative glyph for each object, an axis of motion, mapping glyph position to current degree of urgency of a parameter, and mapping glyph motion rate to the current rate of change of that degree of urgency.
Stated Advantages
Allows one or more users to rapidly perceive and respond to varying operational states.
Helps fleet managers to maintain awareness of all the vehicles under control.
Identifies and anticipates vehicles in need of assistance and prioritizes and acts upon those needs appropriately.
Intuitively alerts the user to vehicles needing attention, reducing the need for constant manual selection to obtain more information.
Documented Applications
Management of a fleet of moving vehicles.
Monitor fleets of aircraft, busses, trucks, as well as other vehicle types and tasks.
Monitor package pickup and delivery tasks.
Monitor the progress of individual students through a training program such as flight training.
Monitor the performance of individual securities in a stock portfolio.
