Abstract

Apparatus and methods are described for use with electrophysiological signal detecting electrodes, and a transcranial magnetic stimulation device. A computer processor drives the transcranial stimulation device to apply one or more pulses of transcranial magnetic stimulation to a subject. Within a given time period of applying one of the one or more pulses of transcranial magnetic stimulation to the subject, the computer processor detects an electrophysiological signal of the subject, using the electrophysiological signal detecting electrodes. At least partially in response thereto, the computer processor predicts an outcome of treating the subject for a neuropsychiatric condition, using a given therapy, and generates an output on an output device in response to the predicted outcome. Other applications are also described.

Core Innovation

The invention provides an apparatus and associated software product and method that couples transcranial magnetic stimulation with electrophysiological signal detecting electrodes to predict an outcome of treating a neuropsychiatric condition. A transcranial stimulation device is driven to apply one or more pulses of transcranial magnetic stimulation to a subject by applying a plurality of trains of transcranial magnetic stimulation.

During delivery, the apparatus detects an electrophysiological signal within a given time period that occurs between successive pulses of a given train. In response to the electrophysiological signal detected within the given time period, the computer processor predicts an outcome of treating the subject for a neuropsychiatric condition using a given therapy and generates an output on an output device.

The described implementation is consistent across the independent claims by requiring temporal alignment of detection and prediction to the pulse structure of a train of transcranial magnetic stimulation. In the provided dependent refinements, the detection and prediction timing can be constrained to a specific time window between successive pulses, and the electrophysiological detection can be implemented using electroencephalography (EEG).

Claims Coverage

The independent claims cover three parallel implementations—an apparatus, a computer software product, and a method—that perform therapy outcome prediction using electrophysiological signals detected between pulses in transcranial magnetic stimulation trains. Across the independent claims, the inventive features are driven by train-based transcranial magnetic stimulation, time-windowed electrophysiological detection between successive pulses, outcome prediction for a neuropsychiatric condition using a given therapy, and output generation.

Train-based transcranial magnetic stimulation driving

A computer processor is configured to drive the transcranial stimulation device to apply one or more pulses of transcranial magnetic stimulation to a subject by driving the transcranial stimulation device to apply a plurality of trains of transcranial magnetic stimulation to the subject.

Time-windowed electrophysiological detection between successive pulses

The computer processor detects an electrophysiological signal of the subject using the electrophysiological signal detecting electrodes within a given time period of applying one of the one or more pulses of transcranial magnetic stimulation to the subject, wherein the given time period occurs between successive pulses of a given train of transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Outcome prediction for a neuropsychiatric condition using a given therapy

At least partially in response to the electrophysiological signal detected within the given time period, the computer processor predicts an outcome of treating the subject for a neuropsychiatric condition, using a given therapy.

Output generation based on predicted outcome

The computer processor generates an output on the output device in response to the predicted outcome.

Non-transitory computer-readable medium for coordinating driving, detection, prediction, and output

A non-transitory computer-readable medium in which program instructions are stored, which instructions, when read by a computer cause the computer to perform driving the transcranial stimulation device to apply a plurality of trains, detecting an electrophysiological signal within a given time period between successive pulses, predicting an outcome of treating the subject for a neuropsychiatric condition using a given therapy, and generating an output on the output device in response to the predicted outcome.

Method of applying TMS trains, detecting electrophysiological signal, and predicting therapy outcome

Applying one or more pulses of transcranial magnetic stimulation to a subject by driving the transcranial stimulation device to apply a plurality of trains of transcranial magnetic stimulation to the subject; detecting an electrophysiological signal of the subject within a given time period of applying one of the one or more pulses, wherein the given time period occurs between successive pulses of a given train; and at least partially in response to the electrophysiological signal detected within the given time period, predicting an outcome of treating the subject for a neuropsychiatric condition, using a given therapy.

Across the independent claims, the coverage centers on predicting neuropsychiatric therapy outcomes by driving a transcranial stimulation device to apply transcranial magnetic stimulation in a plurality of trains, detecting an electrophysiological signal within a given time period occurring between successive pulses of a train, and predicting an outcome for a neuropsychiatric condition using a given therapy, with output generation in the apparatus and software product.
