Abstract

The present invention allows for the creation of a biometrically secure environment that allows viewing, editing and sharing of confidential documents, or the like, in public places, without worrying that someone will see the contents. The invention provides privacy, for example for the purposes of reading documents, in a public environment while having the confidence that you are the only one able to read the document. Privacy may be achieved through methods of identification using biometric features, such as: face, iris or voice recognition. Verification that a real person is viewing the document may also be achieved by pulse recognition. In one embodiment, the screen will shut down when more than one person looks directly at the screen.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to managing access to a display of a user device in a biometrically secured environment for confidential documents in public places. A system includes a user device with a display and a detection device for capturing a field of view in proximity to the display, and uses biometric features of a person to determine whether the person is an authorized user of an opened document.

The system creates a user profile associated with a user that includes a plurality of biometric features associated with the user and a weight associated with each of the plurality of biometric features. The system creates a document profile associated with a document that includes an authorized user, functions that the authorized user can perform on the document, and a minimum confidence level required for the user to be identified as the authorized user.

Upon detecting in the field of view a person, the system determines a first biometric feature of the person and calculates a confidence level using the first biometric feature, the plurality of biometric features from the user profile, and the weight associated with each of the plurality of biometric features. If the calculated confidence level exceeds a predetermined threshold, the system identifies the person as the authorized user, requests an additional biometric feature when the confidence level falls below the threshold, and activates or deactivates the display to allow or prevent the authorized user from performing the functions that the authorized user can perform on the document.

Claims Coverage

The independent claims identified are clm-00001, clm-00006, clm-00010, clm-00017, and clm-00024. Across these independent claims, the coverage centers on weighted biometric features in a user profile, a document profile specifying authorized functions and a minimum confidence level, confidence-level calculation with threshold-based identification, iterative requesting of additional biometric features when confidence is below threshold, and display activation/deactivation to gate document functions.

Weighted biometric confidence based on user profile features and weights

creating a user profile associated with a user, wherein the user profile includes a plurality of biometric features associated with the user and a weight associated with each of the plurality of biometric features; determining a first biometric feature of the person; calculating a confidence level using the first biometric feature of the person, the plurality of biometric features from the user profile, and the weight associated with each of the plurality of biometric features of the user profile

Document profile specifying authorized user, functions, and minimum confidence level

creating a document profile associated with a document, wherein the document profile includes an authorized user, functions that the authorized user can perform on the document, and a minimum confidence level required for the user to be identified as the authorized user

Threshold-based authorized-user identification with iterative additional biometrics

if the calculated confidence level exceeds a predetermined threshold, identifying the person as the authorized user of the document; if the calculated confidence level falls below the predetermined threshold, requesting the person to provide an additional biometric feature and re-calculating the confidence level with the additional biometric feature and the additional biometric feature's weight until either the calculated confidence level exceeds the predetermined threshold or there are no more additional biometric features to be determined, in which case the user is not identified as the authorized user

Gating display access to document functions by activation vs deactivation

if the person is identified as the authorized user, activating the display to allow the authorized user to perform the functions that the authorized user can perform on the document; and if the person is not the authorized user, deactivating the display to prevent the person from performing the functions that the authorized user can perform on the document

Remote storage connected via a communication channel

a storage device and a user device are remote from each other and connected through a communication channel

Non-transitory computer-readable medium implementing the same access-management process

A non-transitory computer-readable medium with computer executable instructions embodied thereon for managing access to a display of a user device, the computer-executable instructions causing a computer to perform the process of creating a user profile, creating a document profile, capturing a field of view, checking profiles, determining biometric features, calculating confidence using weighted biometric features, repeatedly requesting additional biometric features when confidence is below threshold, and activating or deactivating the display based on whether the person is the authorized user

Across the independent claims, the inventive coverage is directed to a biometric access-management system and process that uses weighted biometric feature profiles and confidence-level thresholding with iterative additional biometric feature requests to identify an authorized user, and then conditionally activates or deactivates the display to control which document functions can be performed.
