Abstract

An embodiment includes a process for treating an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) endoleak with a shape memory polymer (SMP) foam device. First, a bifurcated stent graft is placed within the aneurysm while a micro guidewire is positioned within the aneurysm for future catheter access. Second, after placing the iliac graft extension, a catheter is introduced over wire to deliver embolic foams. Third, embolic foams expand and conform to the aneurysm wall. Fourth, embolic foams create a stable thrombus to prevent endoleak formation by isolating peripheral vessels from the aneurysm volume.

Core Innovation

The disclosed invention provides a conduit system that simultaneously has disposed open-cell, polyurethane, thermoset, shape memory polymer foams and metal structures within the conduit. The system includes first, second, and third SMP foams and first, second, and third metal structures, or alternatively two SMP foams and corresponding metal structures, with the foams arranged serially and not fixedly coupled to each other.

Each foam has defined proximal and distal halves that are intersected by specific planes relative to the respective metal structures. A first plane orthogonal to a long axis intersects a proximal half of a corresponding SMP foam, and an additional plane parallel to the first intersects a distal half of the foam without intersecting the corresponding metal structure, with corresponding plane relationships defined for the additional foams and metal structures.

In radiopaque embodiments, the invention further recites radiopaque structures disposed with polyurethane SMP foams in a tube or conduit, with plane relationships defined relative to the radiopaque structures in proximal and distal halves. The SMP foams are constrained by an unexpanded maximum breadth between 0 and 3 mm and are arranged serially without fixed coupling, and the document additionally describes radiopaque approaches involving tungsten and iodine-containing radiopaque chemistries.

Claims Coverage

The partial content includes three independent claims. Across these independent claims, the coverage centers on conduit or tube systems containing serially arranged, non-fixedly coupled polyurethane SMP foams and spatial plane relationships tying proximal and distal foam halves to metal or radiopaque structures, together with strict unexpanded size limits of 0 to 3 mm for each foam.

Serially arranged, non-fixedly coupled polyurethane SMP foams in a conduit

A conduit that simultaneously has disposed within the conduit first, second, and third open-cell polyurethane thermoset SMP foams, or at least two polyurethane SMP foams, arranged serially with respect to each other and not fixedly coupled to each other.

Plane-based proximal and distal foam intersections tied to metal structures

A first plane orthogonal to a long axis of a first SMP foam intersects a proximal half of the first SMP foam and a corresponding metal structure, and an additional first plane parallel to the first plane intersects a distal half of the first SMP foam but does not intersect the first metal structure; corresponding plane relationships are defined for additional SMP foams and their respective metal structures.

Metal structures selected from platinum, tantalum, iridium, or tungsten

The metal structures include at least one of platinum, tantalum, iridium, tungsten, or combinations thereof.

Unexpanded foam size limited to 0–3 mm breadth or diameter

In an unexpanded state, each SMP foam is between 0 and 3 mm in diameter or maximum breadth measured orthogonal to the long axis.

Radiopaque structure embodiments with plane-based proximal and distal intersections

A tube that simultaneously has disposed within the tube at least first, second, and third polyurethane SMP foams arranged serially and not fixedly coupled, together with first, second, and third radiopaque structures, wherein orthogonal proximal planes intersect proximal halves of each SMP foam and additional parallel distal planes intersect distal halves but do not intersect the corresponding radiopaque structure.

Across the independent claims, the document claims systems that place serial, non-fixedly coupled polyurethane thermoset SMP foams within a conduit or tube and fix the proximal and distal plane relationships of each foam to associated metal or radiopaque structures. The claims also impose strict unexpanded size limits and require metal selection from platinum, tantalum, iridium, and/or tungsten, with radiopaque embodiments using radiopaque structures.
