Abstract

Disclosed herein are compositions and methods for treating, reducing or preventing oxidative stress in a subject. The compositions can be chewable confectionaries comprising a chewable base, one or more unprocessed phytochemical ingredients, and a sweetener comprising allulose. The unprocessed phytochemical ingredients can include ground plant materials selected from cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, or combinations thereof. The chewable confectionary can exhibit a polyphenolic content of at least 100 μg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) or greater, per gram of the chewable confectionary and an antioxidant capacity of at least 3,200 μM Trolox equivalents per gram of the chewable confectionary, as determined by the oxygen radical absorbance (ORAC) assay. Kits, methods of making and using the chewable confectionary are also disclosed.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to antioxidant-infused chewable confectionery for addressing oral oxidative stress. It is directed to a chewable confectionary comprising a chewable base together with one or more unprocessed plant materials dispersed throughout the chewable base as grounded particulate materials. The plant material is present in an amount greater than 0.5% by weight based on the total weight of the chewable confectionary.

In one aspect, the unprocessed plant materials comprise Cinnamomum sp. (cinnamon). The confectionary further includes a low or non-caloric sweetener comprising allulose, and the ratio between the cinnamon and allulose is from 1:1 to 1:180. The antioxidant capacity of the chewable confectionary is specified as at least 1,500 μM Trolox equivalents per gram as determined by the oxygen radical absorbance (ORAC) assay.

In another aspect, the invention includes a phytochemical ingredient dispersed throughout the chewable base as unprocessed grounded particulate plant materials, together with allulose as the low or non-caloric sweetener. The phytochemical ingredient is present at greater than 0.5% by weight, the ratio between cinnamon and allulose remains from 1:1 to 1:180, and the antioxidant capacity is at least 1,500 μM Trolox equivalents per gram by the ORAC assay.

Claims Coverage

The partial claim set includes two independent claims with quantitative and compositional requirements. Across these independent claims, the coverage centers on a chewable base containing unprocessed grounded plant particulate, combined with an allulose-based low or non-caloric sweetener and an ORAC-defined antioxidant capacity, under a cinnamon-to-allulose ratio constraint.

Chewable base with dispersed unprocessed grounded cinnamon particulate

A chewable confectionary comprising a chewable base; one or more unprocessed plant materials comprising Cinnamomum sp. (cinnamon) dispersed throughout the chewable base as grounded particulate materials and present in an amount greater than 0.5% by weight based on the total weight of the chewable confectionary.

Allulose sweetener with cinnamon-to-allulose ratio

A low or non-caloric sweetener comprising allulose, wherein a ratio between the cinnamon and allulose is from 1:1 to 1:180.

ORAC-defined antioxidant capacity threshold

The chewable confectionary has an antioxidant capacity of at least 1,500 μM Trolox equivalents per gram as determined by the oxygen radical absorbance (ORAC) assay.

Chewable base with dispersed unprocessed grounded phytochemical particulate

A chewable confectionary comprising a chewable base; one or more unprocessed plant materials comprising a phytochemical ingredient dispersed throughout the chewable base as grounded particulate materials and present in an amount greater than 0.5% by weight based on the total weight of the chewable confectionary.

Allulose sweetener with cinnamon-to-allulose ratio for phytochemical ingredient embodiments

A low or non-caloric sweetener comprising allulose, wherein a ratio between the cinnamon and allulose is from 1:1 to 1:180.

ORAC-defined antioxidant capacity threshold for phytochemical ingredient embodiments

The chewable confectionary has an antioxidant capacity of at least 1,500 μM Trolox equivalents per gram as determined by the oxygen radical absorbance (ORAC) assay.

Overall, the independent claims require a chewable base with dispersed unprocessed grounded plant materials (cinnamon in one claim and a phytochemical ingredient in the other) at greater than 0.5% by weight, an allulose low or non-caloric sweetener with a cinnamon-to-allulose ratio from 1:1 to 1:180, and an antioxidant capacity of at least 1,500 μM Trolox equivalents per gram measured by the ORAC assay.

Stated Advantages

Provides an antioxidant capacity (at least 1,500 μM Trolox equivalents per gram) as determined by the ORAC assay.

Increases total antioxidant capacity in saliva after chewing, measured as Trolox equivalents per gram by the ORAC assay.

Documented Applications

Chewable confectionery for treating/reducing/preventing oral oxidative stress, including chewable forms such as chewing gum or chewable tablets.
