Abstract
This invention relates to a surgery planning tool, which is not a patient implant, comprising an elongated body including at least a portion having the shape and the size of a spinal correction rod.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to non-implant spinal correction surgery planning using an elongated body shaped to match a patient-specific spinal correction rod, including overbent or underbent geometry compared to a final shape after being implanted. The approach is based on obtaining two 2D X-ray images of a spine, performing a patient specific 3D spinal reconstruction from the two 2D X-ray patient images, and determining a patient specific spinal correction.
The tool can be provided singly or as a pair, including one per side of the spine, and can optionally include printed or electronic patient-specific correction information. The patient-specific correction information can be provided in relation to the rod curvature and indications for overbending and underbending.
Embodiments include 3D-printed plastic or resin versions, including segmented hinged or multi-part construction and hollow, cavity, or through-hole structures for mechanical and visual verification of rod length and curvature. Dual-hollow configurations are described for treating both sides simultaneously, with printed or etched patient, rod, and overbending indicators on the tool.
Claims Coverage
The independent claim covers five inventive features.
3D spinal reconstruction from two 2D X-ray images
Obtaining two 2D X-ray images of a spine and, after the obtaining step, making a patient specific 3D spinal reconstruction from said two 2D X-ray patient images.
Determination of patient specific spinal correction
After the 3D reconstruction, determining a patient specific spinal correction.
Surgery planning tool shaped as overbent or underbent rod relative to final implant shape
Manufacturing a surgery planning tool having a shape of a patient specific spinal correction rod implant that is over bended or under bended as compared to a final shape of the spinal correction rod implant after being implanted.
Visual comparison and bending rod to corresponding curvatures
Visually comparing a shape of the spinal correction rod implant with the shape of the tool, and bending the spinal correction rod implant so that the spinal correction rod implant presents curvatures corresponding to the shape.
Implanting to assume final shape and exert straightening effort
Implanting the spinal correction rod implant such that it assumes the final shape, such that a straightening effort is exerted on the spine to align with the patient specific spinal correction.
The inventive coverage centers on reconstructing a patient-specific 3D spine from two 2D X-ray images, determining patient-specific spinal correction, manufacturing a tool shaped as an overbent or underbent rod relative to the intended post-implant final shape, visually comparing and bending the rod to corresponding curvatures, and implanting the rod to assume the final shape and exert a straightening effort.
Stated Advantages
Simplifying and speeding surgery without navigation investment.
Reducing reliance on intra-operative radiographs, thereby reducing radiation dose and cost.
Enabling cross-checking of tool vs. patient correction data.
Improving personalization and sterility.
Documented Applications
Planning and producing a patient-specific spinal correction rod implant for scoliosis correction, using a non-implant spinal correction surgery planning tool derived from 2D X-ray images to create a 3D spinal reconstruction and determine patient-specific correction.
Treating both sides of the spine simultaneously using dual-cavity tool configurations as described in embodiments.
