Abstract

A mini point of care gas chromatographic test strip and method to measure analytes is disclosed. A system for determining the concentration of at least one analyte in a fluid sample having a plurality of analytes includes a base substrate, a first electrode pair disposed over the base substrate, and a first sensing chemistry responsive to at least one analyte in the sample. The first sensing chemistry is in electrical communication with the first electrode pair, and a first chromatographic layer is disposed over the at least one sensing chemistry. At least one analyte of the plurality of analytes moves through the first chromatographic layer at a different rate relative to the movement of other analytes of the plurality of analytes.

Core Innovation

A low-cost point-of-care system is described for determining the concentration of a first analyte and a second analyte in a fluid sample. The system includes a base substrate with a first electrode pair and a second electrode pair disposed over the base substrate, and a first sensing chemistry and a second sensing chemistry in electrical communication with their respective electrode pairs.

A chromatographic layer is disposed over the first sensing chemistry and over the second sensing chemistry. The chromatographic layer permits passage of the first analyte at a first rate such that the first analyte begins to accumulate at the first sensing chemistry at a first time, and permits passage of the second analyte at a second rate such that the second analyte begins to accumulate at the first sensing chemistry at a second time, wherein the first time is different from the second time.

In a corresponding method, the fluid sample is provided to the system and electrical signals are measured. The method includes measuring one or more of a voltage across the first electrode pair, a resistance across the first electrode pair, or a current flow across the first electrode pair at the first time and at the second time, and measuring one or more of the same electrical quantities across the second electrode pair at the first time and at the second time to determine the concentration of the first analyte and the concentration of the second analyte from the measured time-based electrical responses.

Claims Coverage

The partial content includes two independent claims: one directed to a system and one directed to a method. Across these independent claims, the inventive concept relies on two sensing chemistries and two electrode pairs combined with a chromatographic layer that produces different analyte accumulation times, along with electrical measurement at those times to determine analyte concentrations.

Dual-sensing electrode pairs with time-separated analyte accumulation via chromatographic layer

A system comprising a base substrate with a first electrode pair and a second electrode pair disposed over the base substrate; a first sensing chemistry responsive to the first analyte and the second analyte in electrical communication with the first electrode pair; a second sensing chemistry responsive to one or more of the first analyte or the second analyte in electrical communication with the second electrode pair; and a chromatographic layer disposed over the first sensing chemistry and over the second sensing chemistry, configured to permit passage of the first analyte at a first rate such that the first analyte begins to accumulate at the first sensing chemistry at a first time, and configured to permit passage of the second analyte at a second rate such that the second analyte begins to accumulate at the first sensing chemistry at a second time, wherein the first time is different from the second time.

Time-based electrical measurements for determining two analyte concentrations

A method for determining the concentration of a first analyte and a second analyte in a fluid sample, comprising providing the fluid sample to a system including a base substrate; a first electrode pair disposed over the base substrate; a first sensing chemistry responsive to the first analyte and the second analyte in electrical communication with the first electrode pair; a second sensing chemistry responsive to one or more of the first analyte or the second analyte in electrical communication with a second electrode pair; and a chromatographic layer disposed over the first sensing chemistry, wherein the chromatographic layer permits the first analyte to pass through the chromatographic layer at a first rate to begin accumulating at the first sensing chemistry at a first time and permits the second analyte to pass through the chromatographic layer at a second rate to begin accumulating at the first sensing chemistry at a second time with the first time different from the second time, measuring one or more of a voltage across the first electrode pair, a resistance across the first electrode pair, or a current flow across the first electrode pair at the first time and at the second time, measuring one or more of the same electrical quantities across the second electrode pair at the first time and at the second time, and determining the concentration of the first analyte and the concentration of the second analyte.

Across the independent claims, the coverage centers on using a chromatographic layer to create different accumulation times of two analytes at a sensing chemistry associated with an electrode pair, while electrical properties are measured at the distinct times for both electrode pairs to determine concentrations of the first analyte and the second analyte.
