Abstract

The present disclosure relates to heart valve prostheses, delivery devices, actuation handles, and other improved devices and methods that facilitate delivery of a heart valve prosthesis to a defective native valve structure in a patient, such as the aortic valve.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a valve prosthesis delivery device for delivering a valve prosthesis in which the valve prosthesis includes a valve frame and a valve anchor. The delivery device includes an elongate core member extending along a longitudinal axis, and a distal carrier assembly coupled to the core member and including a distal enclosure and a proximal enclosure, each configured with a respective lumen to receive a distal portion and a proximal portion of the valve frame in a compressed configuration.

In the delivery configuration, a sheath component supports the valve anchor in a position longitudinally spaced apart from and proximal to the proximal lumen of the proximal enclosure. The sheath component is proximally retractable along the core member relative to the proximal enclosure to permit expansion of the valve anchor.

A plunger mechanism and a biasing means are disposed within the distal lumen, with the plunger mechanism moveable between a distal position and a proximal position and biased toward the proximal position to urge the valve frame out of the distal lumen. The plunger mechanism includes a plunger head with a plurality of petals extending from the plunger head, the petals including ramped surfaces and engagement teeth configured to deflect radially inward within the distal lumen, deflect radially outward when a portion of the petals exits the distal enclosure, and engage with the distal enclosure in a proximal position to cause proximal extension of the plunger mechanism and advancement of the proximal enclosure for alignment and facilitating removal from a patient.

Claims Coverage

The independent claims explicitly cover 3 main inventive aspects: a distal carrier assembly with distal and proximal enclosures that compress and release portions of a valve frame, a retractable sheath component that supports the valve anchor prior to permitting expansion, and a biased plunger mechanism that urges the valve frame out of the distal lumen, including a plunger head with petals having ramped surfaces and engagement teeth.

Distal carrier assembly with distal and proximal enclosures compressing valve frame portions

A distal carrier assembly comprising a distal enclosure and a proximal enclosure, the distal enclosure coupled to the core member and comprising a distal lumen configured to receive a distal portion of the valve frame within the distal lumen in a compressed configuration, and the proximal enclosure coupled to the core member proximal to the distal enclosure and comprising a proximal lumen configured to receive a proximal portion of the valve frame within the proximal lumen in a compressed configuration.

Retractable sheath supporting the valve anchor and permitting expansion

A sheath component having a sheath lumen configured to receive the valve anchor, wherein in a delivery configuration the sheath component supports the valve anchor in a position longitudinally spaced apart from and proximal to the proximal lumen of the proximal enclosure, and the sheath component being proximally retractable along the core member relative to the proximal enclosure for permitting expansion of the valve anchor.

Biased plunger mechanism urging valve frame out of distal lumen

A plunger mechanism and a biasing means disposed within the distal lumen of the distal carrier assembly, the plunger mechanism moveable between a distal position and a proximal position within the distal lumen, the plunger mechanism biased toward the proximal position by the biasing means for urging the valve frame out of the distal lumen, wherein the plunger mechanism comprises a plunger head with a plurality of petals extending from the plunger head.

Across the independent claims, the core claim coverage centers on delivering a valve prosthesis using a distal carrier assembly with distal and proximal enclosures that receive valve frame portions in a compressed configuration, a sheath component that supports the valve anchor before permitting expansion via proximal retraction, and a biased plunger mechanism within the distal lumen that urges the valve frame out, including a plunger head with a plurality of petals.
