Abstract
The present invention concerns methods of treating systemic, regional, or local inflammation from a patient suffering or at risk of inflammation comprising administration of a therapeutically effective dose of a sorbent that sorbs an inflammatory mediator in said patient. In some preferred embodiments, the sorbent is a biocompatible organic polymer.
Core Innovation
The invention provides methods of treating systemic, regional, or local inflammation in a patient by administering a therapeutically effective dose of a sorbent for a cytokine. The sorbent is a biocompatible polymer that removes cytokines and other inflammatory mediators, thereby addressing inflammation associated with exposure to pathogens or toxins.
The method is directed to patients exposed to a pathogen or toxin through food or water ingestion, aerosol inhalation, or skin contact, or exposed during an epidemic or bioterrorism attack, or exposed to another person who has exhibited symptoms related to infection or inflammation. The inflammatory context includes infection- and inflammation-associated exposure, including conditions such as sepsis and septic shock, and the use spans systemic, regional, and local inflammation.
The biocompatible polymer sorbent comprises residues from one or more monomers selected from divinylbenzene, styrene, ethylstyrene, and mixtures thereof. The polymer is defined by a pore structure where the total pore volume of pore size in the range of 50 Å to 3000 Å is greater than 0.5 cc/g to 3.0 cc/g dry polymer, and the sorbent is administered orally, via a feeding tube, peritoneally, or rectally.
Claims Coverage
The identified independent claim contains two central inventive aspects: treating systemic, regional, or local inflammation using a cytokine sorbent and defining the sorbent as a biocompatible polymer with a specified pore-structure performance and monomer-derived composition, for specified patient exposure contexts and administration routes.
Treating systemic, regional, or local inflammation using a therapeutically effective cytokine sorbent
A method of treating systemic, regional, or local inflammation in a patient comprising administering a therapeutically effective dose of a sorbent for a cytokine to a patient exposed to a pathogen or toxin through food or water ingestion, aerosol inhalation or skin contact, or exposed during an epidemic or bioterrorism attack, or exposed to another person exhibiting symptoms related to infection or inflammation, wherein the sorbent is administered orally, via a feeding tube, peritoneally, or rectally.
Biocompatible polymer sorbent defined by monomer residues and total pore volume
The sorbent is a biocompatible polymer comprising residues from one or more monomers selected from divinylbenzene, styrene, ethylstyrene, and mixtures thereof, the biocompatible polymer having a pore structure such that the total pore volume of pore size in the range of 50 Å to 3000 Å is greater than 0.5 cc/g to 3.0 cc/g dry polymer.
Overall, the claim coverage centers on a treating method that uses a cytokine sorbent, where the sorbent is a biocompatible polymer derived from divinylbenzene, styrene, ethylstyrene, or mixtures thereof and having a total pore volume performance in the stated 50 Å to 3000 Å range, applied to patients with specified pathogen or toxin exposure scenarios and delivered via the specified administration routes.
