Abstract

A fixation device delivery system is described. The system includes a driver and a cooperating fixation element featuring a barb which becomes active upon deployment in the inner abdominal wall.

Core Innovation

The invention provides a tack delivery system for delivery of a tack into tissue within a body. A tack is operably loaded onto a driver device external of the body, and the delivery system includes a driver device with a handle coupled to a shaft and a tack comprising a body defining a tack lumen. The system further includes a cartridge in which multiple tacks are operably stored.

The driver shaft distal end features a stepdown portion dimensioned to engage with and accommodate at least a portion of the tack lumen. The engagement between the tack lumen and the driver device operably defines a frictional or mechanical bias force that retains the tack on the driver device until delivery. The tack includes at least a primary barb with an engagement area that is at least partially occluded on engagement with the driver device and is operably activated upon removal of the stepdown portion from the tack upon delivery and contact of the tack body with the tissue.

When the tack body contacts the tissue, a retention force is established that is greater than the frictional or mechanical bias force between the tack and the driver device, thereby maintaining the tack in tissue. In addition, the cartridge includes a main body portion and a first and second finger that are moveable relative to the main body portion and are operably biased to retain a tack within the cartridge until the driver device engages with the cartridge to effect displacement of the fingers and simultaneous engagement of the tack with the driver device or other delivery instrument.

Claims Coverage

The provided independent claims are clm-00001, clm-00009, clm-00019, and clm-00028. Across these independent claims, the core inventive features are centered on a stepdown portion that frictionally or mechanically retains a tack via the tack lumen, primary barb activation upon stepdown removal at tissue contact, a retention force greater than the retaining bias force, and cartridge-based multi-tack handling with finger retention and a tactile user indication, with methods further specifying abdominal cavity deployment sequences.

Stepdown portion retaining the tack on a driver via tack lumen engagement

A shaft distal end featuring a stepdown portion dimensioned to engage with and accommodate at least a portion of the tack lumen thereon, where the engagement operably defines a frictional or mechanical bias force that retains the tack on the driver device and the tack lumen is correspondingly dimensioned to receive at least a portion of the stepdown portion.

Primary barb engagement area occluded on driver engagement and activated on stepdown removal

At least a primary barb having an engagement area that is at least partially occluded on engagement of the tack with the driver device and is operably activated upon removal of the stepdown portion from the tack upon delivery of the tack into the tissue and contact of the tack body with the tissue.

Tissue contact establishes a retention force greater than retaining bias force

On contact of the tack body with the tissue a retention force is established, the retention force being greater than the frictional or mechanical bias force between the tack and the driver device.

Cartridge stores multiple tacks and finger mechanisms retain a tack until driver engagement

A cartridge comprising a main body portion and a first and second finger each attached to the main body portion at a first end and moveable relative to the main body portion, where the fingers are operably biased to retain a tack within the cartridge until the driver device engages with the cartridge to effect displacement of the fingers away from the tack and simultaneously allow engagement of the tack with the driver device or other delivery instrument.

Trocar or port delivery with deploy by applying pressure and rotating

Deploying the tack within an abdominal cavity by placing a tack on the step-down portion, inserting the shaft through a trocar or port to a desired location, and deploying the tack at the desired location by applying pressure and rotating the driver device.

Cartridge insertion and deploying successive tacks by cartridge rotation and driver retraction

Inserting the cartridge into a trocar or port, inserting the shaft through the cartridge to pick up a tack and advance to a desired location, deploying by applying pressure and rotating, retracting the driver device proximal to a main body section of the cartridge so a next tack can be picked up on the next advancement, rotating the cartridge to align a next tack, and repeating until deploying the next tack.

Tactile feedback element in the cartridge prior to driver removal

A cartridge comprising a tactile feedback element to provide a user with a tactile indication prior to removal of the driver from the cartridge.

The independent claim set is directed to tack delivery systems and methods in which the stepdown portion and the tack lumen create a frictional or mechanical bias to retain the tack, a primary barb is occluded during driver engagement and is activated upon stepdown removal during tissue delivery, and tissue contact establishes a retention force greater than the retaining bias. Cartridge features include finger-based retention for multi-tack handling and a tactile feedback element to indicate prior to driver removal, with methods specifying abdominal cavity deployment using trocar or port insertion and deployment by applying pressure and rotating.
