Abstract

Systems and methods for fitness tracking are provided. An exercise apparatus is in networked communication with a fitness tracking computing system. The configuration and location of movable components of the exercise apparatus is determined based on sensors. This information is provided to the fitness tracking computing system via networked communication.

Core Innovation

The invention describes a fitness tracking computing system that communicates with an exercise apparatus via network communications. The exercise apparatus comprises a positionable extension arm assembly and a shuttle that is slidably coupled to the extension arm assembly. The fitness tracking computing system receives a user identifier and an exercise apparatus identifier from the exercise apparatus, identifies an associated user account based on the user identifier, and transmits an exercise instruction that includes an exercise apparatus positional instruction identifying an instructed extension arm assembly position and an instructed shuttle position correlated to one of a plurality of exercise types.

After transmitting the exercise instruction, the system receives positional information from the exercise apparatus via network communications, the positional information being indicative of a position of the extension arm assembly and a position of the shuttle. The fitness tracking computing system determines whether the exercise apparatus is in a proper configuration based on the received positional information and the exercise apparatus positional instruction. If the exercise apparatus is not in the proper configuration, the system sends a graphical notice to indicate the improper configuration.

If the exercise apparatus is in the proper configuration, the system sends a commence exercise instruction to the exercise apparatus via network communications. Subsequent to sending the commence exercise instruction, the system receives exercise event data transmitted by the exercise apparatus and updates the associated user account based on the exercise event data. In additional embodiments, the system supports storing exercise data and updating it based on categories of parameter types, including user data and medical and insurance data.

Claims Coverage

The document provides three independent claims that cover a fitness tracking computing system, a method performed by the fitness tracking computing system, and a multi-apparatus exercise system with data stores. Across these independent claims, the main inventive features are arranged around user/account identification, transmission of positional exercise instructions for an extension arm assembly and a shuttle, proper-configuration determination using received positional information, conditional graphical notice, commencing exercise, receiving exercise event data, and updating the user account based on the exercise event data.

User and apparatus identification for account association

Receive a user identifier and an exercise apparatus identifier from an exercise apparatus via network communications, identify an associated user account based on the user identifier, and use the associated user account for transmitting exercise instructions.

Positional exercise instructions correlated to exercise types

Transmit an exercise instruction comprising an exercise apparatus positional instruction that identifies an instructed extension arm assembly position and an instructed shuttle position, wherein the instructed extension arm assembly position and the instructed shuttle position correlate to one of a plurality of exercise types performable on the exercise apparatus.

Proper configuration determination using received positional information

Receive positional information from the exercise apparatus indicative of the position of the extension arm assembly and the position of the shuttle, and determine whether the exercise apparatus is in a proper configuration based on the received positional information and the exercise apparatus positional instruction.

Conditional graphical notice and commence exercise control

In response to determining the exercise apparatus is not in the proper configuration, send a graphical notice to the exercise apparatus via network communications to indicate the exercise apparatus is not in the proper configuration; and in response to determining the exercise apparatus is in the proper configuration, send a commence exercise instruction to the exercise apparatus via network communications.

Exercise event data reception and user account update

Subsequent to sending the commence exercise instruction, receive exercise event data transmitted by the exercise apparatus and update the associated user account based on the exercise event data.

Multi-apparatus system with stored user accounts and instruction database

Provide a system including a plurality of exercise apparatuses and a fitness tracking computing system with one or more data stores storing a user database comprising a plurality of user accounts and an exercise instruction database, where the fitness tracking computing system transmits an exercise apparatus positional instruction from the exercise instruction database to the exercise apparatus.

Collectively, the independent claims cover a networked fitness tracking computing system that associates a user identifier with a user account, transmits exercise-type-specific positional instructions for an extension arm assembly and a shuttle, verifies proper apparatus configuration from received positional information and issues a graphical notice when improper, and controls commencement while receiving exercise event data to update the user account. The multi-apparatus independent claim further specifies stored user accounts and an exercise instruction database used for transmitting positional instructions.
