Abstract
An apparatus useful for the rapid collection of blood from a subject (e.g., a blood vessel, such as the vein, artery or capillary bed of a bovine subject) and dispensing the blood therefrom into a test or collection device. In general, the apparatus comprises: (a) a body having a chamber formed therein, said chamber having an inlet and outlet, with said chamber configured to draw blood therein; (b) a hollow barrel connected to said chamber outlet; (c) an ejector operatively associated with said barrel; (d) a hollow needle connected to said body, with said hollow needle in fluid communication with said chamber through said inlet, so that blood can be rapidly drawn into said chamber through said needle. The needle is optionally removed and blood dispensed from the body into a test or collection device by actuating the ejector.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to an apparatus useful for the rapid collection of blood from the blood vessel of a subject and dispensing the blood therefrom. The apparatus includes a body having a chamber formed therein with an inlet and outlet, where the chamber is configured to draw blood therein. A hollow barrel is connected to the chamber outlet, and an ejector is operatively associated with the barrel.
A hollow needle is connected to the body and is in fluid communication with the chamber through the inlet, so blood is rapidly drawn into the chamber through the needle. The needle is removed from the body using a hub member, and then blood is dispensed by activating the ejector. The apparatus includes a hub member with both the hollow needle and the body connected to the hub member, with at least one of the hollow needle and the body removably connected to the hub member.
Chelating agent or anticoagulant is contained in the chamber and/or the hollow needle in a predetermined amount. The disclosed configuration supports rapid blood draw into the chamber and subsequent dispensing after separating the needle using the hub member. The apparatus and corresponding method use the chamber, hollow needle, hollow barrel, ejector, and predetermined amount of chelating agent or anticoagulant.
Claims Coverage
The document provides two independent claims covering a rapid blood collection and dispensing apparatus and a corresponding method of collecting and dispensing a blood sample, with chelating agent or anticoagulant in a predetermined amount.
Rapid blood collection and dispensing apparatus with chamber inlet/outlet
An apparatus useful for the rapid collection of blood from the blood vessel of a subject and dispensing the blood therefrom, comprising a body having a chamber with an inlet and outlet configured to draw blood therein.
Barrel and ejector for dispensing blood from chamber
A hollow barrel connected to the chamber outlet and an ejector operatively associated with the barrel for dispensing blood by activating the ejector.
Hollow needle in fluid communication with chamber and hub-based needle removal
A hollow needle connected to the body with the hollow needle in fluid communication with the chamber through the inlet so blood is rapidly drawn into the chamber through the needle, the needle removed from the body using a hub member, and then blood dispensed by activating the ejector.
Chelating agent or anticoagulant in predetermined amount in chamber and/or needle
Chelating agent or anticoagulant contained in the chamber and/or the hollow needle in a predetermined amount.
Hub member with removably connected needle/body
A hub member with both the hollow needle and the body connected to the hub member, with at least one of the hollow needle and the body removably connected to the hub member.
Method steps: insert needle, withdraw and separate using hub, then actuate ejector
A method of collecting a blood sample with a blood collecting apparatus, comprising inserting the hollow needle into the subject for a time sufficient for the chamber to at least partially fill, withdrawing the needle, separating the needle from the chamber using the hub member, and dispensing the blood sample from the chamber by actuating the ejector.
Chelating agent or anticoagulant present in chamber and/or needle during method
Chelating agent or anticoagulant contained in the chamber and/or the needle in a predetermined amount.
Overall, the claim coverage centers on a rapid blood collection apparatus and method using a chamber with inlet and outlet, a hollow needle connected via a hub member, a hollow barrel with an ejector for dispensing, and chelating agent or anticoagulant contained in the chamber and/or needle in a predetermined amount.
Stated Advantages
Enables rapid collection of blood from the blood vessel of a subject and dispensing the blood therefrom.
Documented Applications
Collecting a blood sample from a subject using the blood collecting apparatus, including in the disclosed method context for bovine.
