Abstract
Disclosed is an inflatable balloon for medical use, intended to be inserted deflated into a human or animal body cavity and then inflated once inside this cavity so as to apply pressure against the cavity. The inflatable balloon includes a balloon body, the wall of which is made from a flexible inflatable material, the balloon body having a generally elongated shape with a proximal inflation end and a distal positioning end at the back of the cavity. It further includes an inflation opening formed in the proximal end through which a fluid is introduced into the balloon body so as to inflate it under pressure. The wall of the balloon body locally has an elongated portion called the sole that is stiffer than the rest of the wall, this sole extending from the proximal end to the distal end.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to an inflatable balloon for medical use, intended to be inserted deflated into a human or animal body cavity and then inflated once inside the cavity to apply pressure against it. The balloon comprises a balloon body having a flexible inflatable material wall with a generally elongated shape, with a proximal inflation end and a distal positioning end, and a locally elongated stiffer portion called the sole, extending from the proximal end to the distal end to locally change mechanical behavior along the elongated shape.
The balloon further comprises an inflation opening formed in the proximal end through which a fluid is introduced into the balloon body so as to inflate it under pressure. In addition, an endoscope opening is further formed in the proximal end, designed for the introduction of an endoscope into the balloon body. The endoscope opening leads into the inside of the balloon body at the inside of an elongated sock that has a closed distal end, the closed distal end not fixed to the wall of the balloon body.
Further embodiments described in the document include an internal elongated sock with a closed distal end to prevent endoscope contact with balloon fluid, and an optional endoscope opening with a valve at the proximal end so that an endoscope can be introduced into the balloon body while preventing fluid outflow. The document also discusses embodiments with a distal stiffener shaped to prevent balloon elongation during inflation, and an optional removable rigid insertion rod and/or a placement wire aligned with the inflation opening end piece and/or the sole.
Claims Coverage
The document includes one independent claim (clm-00001). It defines a medically used inflatable balloon with a flexible elongated wall, a locally stiffer elongated sole, proximal inflation and endoscope openings, and an internal elongated sock having a closed distal end not fixed to the balloon wall.
Inflatable medical balloon with elongated flexible inflatable wall and proximal and distal ends
An inflatable balloon for medical use with a balloon body whose wall is made from a flexible inflatable material having a generally elongated shape with a proximal inflation end and a distal positioning end.
Locally elongated stiffer sole extending from proximal inflation end to distal positioning end
The wall locally has an elongated portion called the sole that is stiffer than the rest of the wall, extending from the proximal end to the distal end.
Proximal inflation opening to introduce fluid and inflate under pressure
An inflation opening formed in the proximal end through which a fluid is introduced into the balloon body to inflate it under pressure.
Proximal endoscope opening designed for introduction of an endoscope
An endoscope opening further formed in the proximal end, designed for the introduction of an endoscope into the balloon body.
Endoscope opening leading into an inside elongated sock with a closed distal end not fixed to the wall
The endoscope opening leads into the inside of the balloon body at the inside of an elongated sock that has a closed distal end not fixed to the wall of the balloon body.
The claim coverage centers on an inflatable medical balloon that can be inserted deflated and inflated to apply pressure, while enabling endoscopic access through a proximal endoscope opening leading to an internal elongated sock with a closed distal end not fixed to the balloon wall and incorporating a locally stiffer elongated sole.
Stated Advantages
Simplify insertion/positioning by providing a locally elongated stiffer sole portion extending from the proximal end to the distal end.
Prevent fluid outflow while allowing introduction of an endoscope via an endoscope opening and valve, as described in embodiments.
Prevent balloon elongation during inflation via a distal stiffener, as described in embodiments.
Allow endoscope insertion without endoscope contact with balloon fluid, as described for the elongated sock with a closed distal end.
Documented Applications
Otorhinolaryngology/nasal cavity application for controlling pressure to conform to nasal walls.
Surgical/compression application discussed for epistaxis/bleeding.
