Abstract
A method of enhancing the growth of an animal, as well as treating or preventing antimicrobial infections is provided. The method includes causing the animal to ingest or absorb an effective amount of one or more Fe III complex compounds, including but not limited to Fe III complexes comprising ligands bound to the iron center such as amino acids or α-hydroxy acids. The compounds are also useful for inhibiting, reducing, or preventing biofilm formation or buildup on a surface; the treatment of, inhibition of growth of, and inhibition of colonization by, bacteria, both in biological and non-biological environments; disinfecting surfaces, potentiating the effects of antibiotics and other anti-microbial agents, and increasing the sensitivity of bacteria and other microorganisms, to anti-microbial agents are also provided.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to causing a mammal to ingest or absorb an effective amount of a milk replacer composition comprising one or more Fe(III) complex compounds of Formula I. In Formula I, Fe(III) is present with x being an integer value of 1-2 and y being an integer value of 1-3, and each ligand is independently a conjugate base of a specified α-hydroxy acid or a conjugate base of a specified amino acid, with salts and/or hydrates thereof included.
The disclosed approach centers on enhancing growth in a mammal by using Fe(III) complex compounds in a milk replacer composition that the mammal ingests or absorbs. Documented embodiments include body weight-related and feed/mortality-related metrics, and specific Formula I ligand choices such as ferric-lactate, ferric-citrate, and ferric-tartrate are described as refinements.
The partial content also states that the Fe(III) compounds are positioned as biofilm-inhibiting agents and as agents that enhance animal growth, including use as livestock or aquaculture feed additives. The disclosure further describes formulations and applications involving administration via ingestion or absorption, topical delivery and coatings for surfaces or medical devices, and disinfection/cleaning formulations.
Claims Coverage
The claim set centers on using Fe(III) complex compounds of Formula I in a milk replacer composition administered by ingestion or absorption to enhance growth, with dependent refinements specifying particular Formula I ligands/complexes, defining enhanced growth by measured metrics, imposing ligand-dependent Fe(III) concentration constraints, limiting the target juvenile mammal group, and restricting the composition’s physical forms.
Iron(III) complex milk replacer for mammal growth enhancement
A method of enhancing the growth of a mammal by causing the mammal to ingest or absorb an effective amount of a milk replacer composition comprising one or more Fe(III) complex compounds of Formula I, wherein x is 1-2, y is 1-3, and each ligand is independently a conjugate base of a selected α-hydroxy acid or a conjugate base of a selected amino acid, with salts and/or hydrates thereof.
Ferric-lactate/citrate/tartrate Formula I complex selection
The method further comprises selecting the one or more Formula I compounds as complexes of ferric ion with lactate, citrate, and tartrate.
Measurement-based definition of enhanced growth
Enhanced growth is determined based on measurements of selected characteristics including body weight-related and feed/mortality-related metrics, including average body weight (ABW), average feed intake (AFI), weight gain, average weight gain (AWG), and mortality adjusted feed conversion ratio (MFCR).
Citric acid conjugate base ligand with specified Fe(III) concentration range
When the ligand is a citric acid conjugate base, the milk replacer composition includes an Fe(III) complex compound at a concentration between 0.1 g/kg and 5 g/kg.
Specified physical forms of the milk replacer composition
The milk replacer composition is formulated in one of the physical forms including liquid, gel, powder, tablet, capsule, solution, suspension, or syrup.
Juvenile mammal selection limited to named animals (and humans)
The method is carried out on a juvenile mammal selected from swine, cattle, sheep, camelids, rabbits, or humans.
Overall claim coverage centers on using Fe(III) complex compounds of Formula I in a milk replacer composition to enhance growth, with dependent refinements specifying particular ligands and complexes, defining enhanced growth by specific measured metrics, imposing concentration constraints, limiting the target juvenile mammal group, and restricting the composition’s physical forms.
