Abstract
A controller for an electrosurgical device and related methods and devices are disclosed. The controller has a processing component to: (a) derive a power factor of power applied to the electrosurgical device; and (b) responsive to the deriving a power factor, assign a circuit status to a circuit comprising the electrosurgical device. IF (PF≈0) and ((Vrms/Irms)≥T), THEN the circuit status is “open”. IF (PF≈0) and ((Vrms/Irms)<T), THEN the circuit status is “short”. PF is the power factor. Vrms is the root mean square of a voltage associated with the power applied to the at electrosurgical device. Irms is the root mean square of a current associated with the power applied to the electrosurgical device. T is a threshold value.
Core Innovation
A controller for an electrosurgical device controls a power output of the electrosurgical device by deriving a power factor of power applied to the electrosurgical device from applied power. The controller uses the derived power factor to assign a circuit status to a circuit comprising the electrosurgical device.
The controller assigns a circuit status using threshold logic based on IF (PF≥0) and ((Vrms/Irms)≥T), THEN the circuit status is “open”, and IF (PF≥0) and ((Vrms/Irms)<T), THEN the circuit status is “short”. In the logic, PF is the power factor, Vrms is the root mean square of a voltage associated with the power applied to the electrosurgical device, Irms is the root mean square of a current associated with the power applied to the electrosurgical device, and T is a threshold value.
In an electrosurgical device implementation, the device includes a voltage sensor, a current sensor, at least one electrode, and a controller with a processing component responsive to the voltage sensor and the current sensor. The controller derives the power factor of power applied to the electrosurgical device and assigns the circuit status to the circuit comprising the electrosurgical device using the open/short comparison involving PF and the Vrms/Irms ratio relative to T.
Claims Coverage
The combined set includes three independent claims covering a controller architecture, a method, and an electrosurgical device. Across the independent claims, the inventive features are the derivation of power factor from applied power and the threshold-based assignment of circuit status “open” or “short” using PF and the Vrms/Irms ratio with threshold value T.
Power factor derivation and threshold-based circuit status assignment
A controller for an electrosurgical device controls a power output and derives a power factor of power applied, then assigns a circuit status to a circuit comprising the electrosurgical device; wherein IF (PF≥0) and ((Vrms/Irms)≥T), THEN the circuit status is “open”, and IF (PF≥0) and ((Vrms/Irms)<T), THEN the circuit status is “short”, where PF is the power factor, Vrms is the root mean square of a voltage associated with the power applied, Irms is the root mean square of a current associated with the power applied, and T is a threshold value.
Power factor derivation and threshold-based circuit status assignment (method)
A method includes deriving a power factor of power applied to the electrosurgical device and assigning a circuit status to a circuit comprising the electrosurgical device; wherein IF (PF≥0) and ((Vrms/Irms)≥T), THEN the circuit status is “open”, and IF (PF≥0) and ((Vrms/Irms)<T), THEN the circuit status is “short”, where PF is the power factor, Vrms is the root mean square of a voltage associated with the power applied, Irms is the root mean square of a current associated with the power applied, and T is a threshold value.
Electrosurgical device with sensors deriving PF and assigning open/short circuit status
An electrosurgical device includes a voltage sensor, a current sensor, at least one electrode, and a controller configured to control a power output of the at least one electrode; the controller comprises a processing component responsive to the voltage sensor and the current sensor to derive a power factor of power applied and assign a circuit status to a circuit comprising the electrosurgical device; wherein IF (PF≥0) and ((Vrms/Irms)≥T), THEN the circuit status is “open”, and IF (PF≥0) and ((Vrms/Irms)<T), THEN the circuit status is “short”, where PF is the power factor, Vrms is the root mean square of a voltage associated with the power applied, Irms is the root mean square of a current associated with the power applied, and T is a threshold value.
Across the independent claims, the coverage centers on deriving a power factor of power applied to an electrosurgical device and assigning a circuit status to a circuit comprising the electrosurgical device as “open” or “short” using threshold comparisons involving PF and the Vrms/Irms ratio with threshold value T.
Stated Advantages
