Abstract

A protective cover for the protection against contamination from body and/or irrigation fluid during treatment of wounds/ulcers includes a first opening to be placed on a patient and a second opening for inserting a handpiece. The protective cover includes a fluid-tight and flexible hollow body that defines a treatment chamber having a shape that adapts to motion of a handpiece. The hollow body may include a stiffening element for keeping the first opening in an open state during treatment. Additionally, a device for the irrigation of wounds or ulcers, such as for debriding dead body tissue by way of a micro water jet, may include a hand-operated lance with a nozzle for producing an irrigation fluid jet, such as a micro water jet. The lance may be inserted through the second opening of the protective cover so that the nozzle is located within the treatment chamber of the protective cover.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a protective cover for protection against contamination from body and/or irrigation fluid during treatment of wounds or ulcers. The protective cover comprises a hollow body that is fluid-tight and flexible, and defines an interior treatment chamber with a shape that adapts to a motion of a wound-treatment handpiece.

The hollow body is formed having a funnel shape, where the larger opening forms the first opening and the smaller opening is covered with a transparent plate for visually monitoring a treatment area. The stiffening element extends around a longitudinal axis of the hollow body in a helical shape over at least part of a length of its shell, and is composed of elastically resilient material, in particular of elastically resilient plastic.

During treatment, the elasticity allows compression and expansion of the funnel-shaped hollow body in the direction of its longitudinal axis to keep the first opening in an open state. The protective cover further includes at least one absorbent inner layer and at least one outer layer made of fluid-tight material, particularly for receiving aerosol fluid produced during treatment and for preventing contaminated fluid from escaping into an environment.

Claims Coverage

The independent claims define three main inventive features: a fluid-tight flexible hollow body with a motion-adaptive treatment chamber, a funnel-shaped hollow body with a transparent monitoring plate, and elastically resilient stiffening that keeps a first opening open during treatment while allowing compression and expansion along a longitudinal axis.

Fluid-tight flexible hollow body with motion-adaptive treatment chamber

A protective cover comprising a hollow body that is fluid-tight and flexible, and in an interior defines a treatment chamber having a shape that adapts to a motion of said handpiece.

Funnel shape with transparent monitoring plate

The hollow body is formed having a funnel shape, where its larger opening forms said first opening and its smaller opening is covered with a transparent plate for visually monitoring a treatment area.

Elastically resilient helical stiffening to keep first opening open

The hollow body is provided with at least one stiffening element for keeping said first opening in an open state during treatment, wherein said stiffening element extends around a longitudinal axis of said hollow body in a helical shape over at least part of a length of its shell, the stiffening element being composed of elastically resilient material, in particular of elastically resilient plastic, the elasticity of which during the treatment allows compression and expansion of said funnel-shaped hollow body in the direction of said longitudinal axis.

Layered web construction with seam

The hollow body is formed from a web of material that is composed of one or more layers, ends of which are connected to each other by a seam, and said hollow body is provided with at least one stiffening element for keeping said first opening in an open state during treatment.

Convex curved transparent plate

The second opening is covered with a transparent plate for visually monitoring a treatment area, wherein said transparent plate is configured as a convex curved plate, a curvature of which is directed outwardly away from said treatment chamber.

Across the independent claims, the inventive concept is a fluid-tight flexible protective cover for wound or ulcer treatment with a funnel-shaped hollow treatment chamber shaped to adapt to handpiece motion, a transparent plate for visually monitoring, and an elastically resilient stiffening element that keeps a first opening open while enabling compression and expansion along a longitudinal axis.

Stated Advantages

Reduces cross-infection by providing protection against contamination from body and/or irrigation fluid during treatment.

Allows visually monitoring a treatment area through a transparent plate.

Maintains the first opening in an open state during treatment while the hollow body compresses and expands in the direction of its longitudinal axis.

Prevents contaminated fluid from escaping into an environment via a fluid-tight outer layer.

Documented Applications

Used during treatment of wounds or ulcers with a wound-treatment handpiece, including visual monitoring of a treatment area using a transparent plate.

Used in conjunction with irrigation fluid and aerosol fluid produced during treatment in a fluid-tight treatment chamber for contamination protection.

Used with debridement using a micro water-jet lance, where the protective cover is described as helping to reduce cross-infection and preserve visibility.
