Abstract

An antimicrobial suture comprising a filament and taurolidine.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to antimicrobial suture and antimicrobial surgical staple materials in which taurolidine is carried by at least one filament of the suture or carried by the surgical staple. The taurolidine is incorporated in a taurolidine-containing matrix of material that is associated with the filament or staple so that antimicrobial activity is provided through the taurolidine carried by the device.

In the antimicrobial suture, the at least one filament comprises a material selected from polyglycolide (PGA), poly-p-dioxanone, poly ε-caprolactone, poly(glycolide-trimethylene carbonate) block copolymer and glycolide-dioxanone-trimethylene carbonate triblock copolymer. The filament is extruded, and the taurolidine-containing matrix of material is co-extruded with the filament.

The taurolidine-containing matrix can be arranged with taurolidine incorporated as a substantially evenly dispersed distribution within the matrix, or restricted to one or more regions of the matrix. The invention further covers multifilament suture structures with taurolidine positioned in interstitial spaces between the filaments, and structural or surface features such as overcoating and barbs.

Claims Coverage

The document provides four independent claims. They cover an antimicrobial suture with a taurolidine-containing matrix co-extruded with an extruded filament of selected suture polymers, a wound-treating method using that antimicrobial suture, an antimicrobial surgical staple with taurolidine carried by the staple, and a wound-treating method using the antimicrobial surgical staple.

Taurolidine carried by co-extruded extruded antimicrobial suture filament

An antimicrobial suture comprising at least one filament and an antimicrobial consisting of taurolidine carried by said at least one filament, where said at least one filament comprises material selected from polyglycolide (PGA), poly-p-dioxanone, poly ε-caprolactone, poly(glycolide-trimethylene carbonate) block copolymer and glycolide-dioxanone-trimethylene carbonate triblock copolymer; taurolidine is incorporated in a taurolidine-containing matrix of material; said at least one filament is extruded; and the taurolidine-containing matrix of material is co-extruded with said at least one filament.

Wound treating with taurolidine-carried antimicrobial suture

A method for treating a wound comprising providing an antimicrobial suture comprising at least one filament and taurolidine carried by said at least one filament; and treating the wound with the antimicrobial suture.

Taurolidine carried by antimicrobial surgical staple

An antimicrobial surgical staple comprising a surgical staple; and taurolidine carried by said surgical staple.

Wound treating with taurolidine-carried antimicrobial surgical staple

A method for treating a wound comprising providing an antimicrobial surgical staple, the antimicrobial surgical staple comprising a surgical staple, and taurolidine carried by the surgical staple; and treating the wound with the antimicrobial surgical staple.

Overall, the claim set centers on taurolidine being carried by the wound-closure device, either a suture or a surgical staple. The suture claim specifies a taurolidine-containing matrix co-extruded with an extruded filament made from selected suture polymers, with additional features in the family refining distribution or placement of taurolidine within filament structures.

Stated Advantages

Increasing antimicrobial activity with increasing taurolidine concentration.

Total kill observed for sufficient taurolidine levels.

Documented Applications

Treating a wound with an antimicrobial suture comprising at least one filament and taurolidine carried by the filament.

Treating a wound with an antimicrobial surgical staple comprising a surgical staple and taurolidine carried by the staple.
