Abstract
Apparatus and methods for sealing a puncture through tissue includes an introducer sheath sized for introduction into a puncture, cartridge sized for insertion into the introducer carrying a sealant, and a locking element for coupling the introducer sheath to the cartridge. When the cartridge is advanced into the introducer sheath, the locking element couples the introducer sheath to the cartridge such that subsequent retraction of the cartridge causes the introducer sheath to retract, thereby deploying the sealant from the cartridge within the puncture beyond the introducer sheath.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to apparatus and methods for sealing a puncture extending through tissue having an introducer sheath therein. A cartridge is provided with a proximal end, a distal end sized for insertion through the introducer sheath within the puncture, and a lumen extending between the proximal and distal ends. Sealant is disposed within the lumen of the cartridge, and a pusher member is disposed within the lumen for deploying the sealant distally from the lumen when the cartridge is retracted proximally relative to the pusher member.
The apparatus includes a locking element on the cartridge that is sized for introduction into a lumen of the introducer sheath when the cartridge is inserted into the introducer sheath. The locking element includes an extension having at least one first detent, and the cartridge is coupled to at least one second detent, where the locking element comprises a sleeve with a passage configured to receive the at least one second detent to thereby couple the cartridge to the locking element. The coupled movement provides that subsequent proximal movement of the cartridge causes corresponding proximal movement of the introducer sheath, and the sealant is deployed beyond the introducer sheath distal end.
The document also describes a system in which an introducer sheath is coupled to a tubular member carrying sealant using a locking element having detents that engage mating features within the lumen of the introducer sheath. The locking structure is described as including one or more first detents and one or more second detents configured to engage mating features and an inner surface of the locking element, respectively.
Claims Coverage
The partial content provides three independent claims. Across these independent claims, the main inventive features are the coupled cartridge-to-introducer-sheath motion using a detent-based locking element, and the deployment of sealant beyond the introducer sheath distal end via retraction-controlled pusher action.
Detent-based locking element coupling cartridge and introducer sheath for coordinated proximal movement
A locking element on the cartridge having an extension with at least one first detent, with the locking element sized for introduction into a lumen of the introducer sheath when the cartridge is inserted into the introducer sheath, wherein the cartridge is coupled to at least one second detent and the locking element comprises a sleeve with a passage therethrough configured to receive the at least one second detent to thereby couple the cartridge to the locking element such that subsequent proximal movement of the cartridge causes a corresponding proximal movement of the introducer sheath.
Sealant disposed in cartridge lumen and distal deployment by pusher relative retraction
Sealant disposed within the lumen of the cartridge, and a pusher member disposed within the lumen of the cartridge for deploying the sealant distally from the lumen of the cartridge when the cartridge is retracted proximally relative to the pusher member.
System coupling introducer sheath and tubular member with locking element for proximal movement sealant deployment
A system with an introducer sheath and a tubular member including a locking element carried on the tubular member, where the locking element couples the introducer sheath to the tubular member when the tubular member and the locking element are advanced into the lumen of the introducer sheath such that subsequent proximal movement of the tubular member causes corresponding proximal movement of the introducer sheath to deploy the sealant beyond the introducer sheath distal end, with the locking element comprising one or more first detents for engaging mating features within the lumen of the introducer sheath and the tubular member comprising one or more second detents for engaging an inner surface of the locking element.
The independent claims focus on detent-based locking that couples the cartridge or tubular member to the introducer sheath to create corresponding proximal movement, together with sealant held in a lumen and deployed distally by a pusher when the cartridge or tubular member is retracted.
Stated Advantages
Avoids premature deployment by providing coordinated movement of the introducer sheath with retraction of the cartridge so that sealant is deployed beyond the introducer sheath distal end.
Documented Applications
Sealing a vascular puncture that includes an introducer sheath, with hemostasis by deploying sealant beyond the sheath distal end.
