Abstract

Disclosed is a method of reducing the rancid fish odor smell in a topical composition comprised of fish oil which comprises mixing the composition with monolaurin. Also disclosed are various anhydrous topical compositions comprising fish oil. One comprises fish oil, cetyl ester, palm olein, medium-chain triglyceride(s) of a mixture of C8 and C10 fatty acids, mixture of C8/C10 fatty acids, and monolaurin, another one comprises fish oil, cetyl ester, palm olein, medium-chain triglyceride(s) of a mixture of C8 and C10 fatty acids, mixture of C8/C10 fatty acids, monolaurin, collagen and sea salt, an a third one comprises fish oil, cetyl ester, palm olein, medium-chain triglyceride(s) of a mixture of C8 and C10 fatty acids, mixture of C8/C10 fatty acids, monolaurin and hydrocolloid. These compositions are useful for treating wounds and skin conditions.

Core Innovation

The invention discloses an anhydrous topical fish-oil formulation containing fish oil, palm olein, C8/C10 fatty acid, and C8/C10 triglycerides, together with cetyl ester and monolaurin. The composition is constrained so that the saturated compounds in the fish oil, palm olein, and C8/C10 triglycerides and the mono-unsaturated compounds in the fish oil, palm olein, and C8/C10 fatty acids have a weight ratio ranging from about 1.8 to about 2.2. The sum of the dry weight percent of all components present is equal to 100%.

A second embodiment further defines an anhydrous composition as a collagen-containing anhydrous metastable matrix in which collagen is present with glass transition temperature less than 37° C., together with sea salt, while still maintaining the saturated-to-mono-unsaturated weight ratio of about 1.8 to about 2.2 and the total dry weight percent summing to 100%. The formulation includes fish oil, palm olein, C8/C10 triglyceride, cetyl ester, and monolaurin, with component weight ranges and additional relationships between the monolaurin and cetyl ester included in the claimed structure.

The invention also provides an anhydrous approach to removing rancid fish smell from a topical fish oil composition by incorporating monolaurin into the defined fish-oil/palm-olein/C8-C10 fatty acid and triglyceride composition. The method requires that collagen is not present, while fish oil, palm olein, C8/C10 fatty acid, C8/C10 triglyceride, and cetyl ester are present within specified weight ranges and the saturated-to-mono-unsaturated weight ratio is maintained at about 1.8 to about 2.2. Monolaurin is added to achieve a specified monolaurin concentration range in the resulting topical composition.

In the disclosed use context, the formulations are applied topically for wound/skin treatment and are described with patient clinical examples, including diabetic ulcers and adjunct therapy after vascular surgery for peripheral arterial disease. The document further states that the compositions show no lingering rancid fish odor and improved wound/skin outcomes in the cited examples, and it describes a preparation concept based on single-phase formation within a specified temperature window [procedural detail omitted for safety].

Claims Coverage

The provided independent claims are directed to anhydrous topical compositions and a method for removing rancid fish smell, with four inventive features spanning fish oil, palm olein, C8/C10 fatty acid and/or C8/C10 triglycerides, cetyl ester, monolaurin, and in one claim collagen and sea salt. The claims consistently require a saturated-to-mono-unsaturated weight ratio of about 1.8 to about 2.2 and dry weight percent summing to 100%, while distinguishing collagen-containing compositions from collagen-free smell-removal methods.

Saturated-to-mono-unsaturated constrained anhydrous topical fish-oil composition

An anhydrous topical composition comprising fish oil, palm olein, C8/C10 fatty acid, C8/C10 triglycerides, cetyl ester, and monolaurin, wherein the weight ratio of the saturated compounds to the mono-unsaturated compounds ranges from about 1.8 to about 2.2 and the sum of the dry weight percent of all of the components present is equal to 100%.

Collagen-containing metastable anhydrous topical composition with sea salt

An anhydrous topical composition comprising fish oil, palm olein, C8/C10 triglyceride, cetyl ester, monolaurin, collagen having a glass transition temperature less than 37° C., and sea salt, while maintaining the saturated-to-mono-unsaturated weight ratio of about 1.8 to about 2.2 and a total dry weight percent of 100%.

Fish oil, monolaurin, and cetyl ester anhydrous topical composition

An anhydrous topical composition comprised of fish oil, monolaurin, and cetyl ester within specified weight ranges.

Monolaurin-based method for removing rancid fish smell without collagen

A method for removing the rancid fish smell from a topical fish oil composition that includes fish oil, palm olein, C8/C10 fatty acid, C8/C10 triglyceride, and cetyl ester, wherein collagen is not present, and comprising adding monolaurin to a specified concentration while maintaining the saturated-to-mono-unsaturated weight ratio and dry weight percent sum.

Across the independent claims, the inventive features center on defined anhydrous topical fish-oil compositions, a collagen-containing metastable composition with sea salt, a fish oil/monolaurin/cetyl ester composition, and a collagen-free method for removing rancid fish smell. The recurring claim constraints are the specific component weight ranges, the saturated-to-mono-unsaturated weight ratio of about 1.8 to about 2.2, and the requirement that the dry weight percent of all components present equals 100%.
