Abstract
A device for treating a heart condition in a patient. The device has a body adapted and configured to self-expand from a radially collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration. In its expanded configuration, the device has a first section at a first end, a second section at a second end and a central portion extending between the first and second sections, the first and second sections each having diameters that increase with distance from the central portion toward the first and second ends, respectively. The body is configured to be delivered percutaneously to a patient's heart and allowed to self-expand in an opening in a septum of the heart to dispose the first end in the left atrium, the second end in the right atrium and the central portion in the opening to permit blood to flow through the body from the left atrium to the right atrium.
Core Innovation
The disclosed invention relates to devices and methods for treating a heart condition in a patient by relieving left atrial pressure in heart failure. A device is provided that self-expands from a radially collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration, with a first section and a second section joined at first ends and diameters that gradually increase with distance from their first ends toward their second ends.
The expanded device includes an annular gap between the first and second sections, with the first ends positioned at a midpoint of the annular gap. The body has a centrally located passage extending through the first and second sections, and the device is configured to be delivered percutaneously to a patient's heart and allowed to self-expand in an opening in a septum of the heart, disposing the first section in the left atrium and the second section in the right atrium to permit blood to flow from the left atrium to the right atrium.
In refinements, the device includes a valve disposed in the body that is biased to a closed configuration and configured to open at a left atrium to right atrium pressure differential threshold of at least 2 mm Hg. Additional disclosed refinements describe construction of the body as braided mesh and sizing and configuration of the first and second sections to engage the septum at the opening when the body is expanded in the opening.
Claims Coverage
The partial content identifies one independent claim and multiple dependent refinements for the same device concept. The independent claim covers a percutaneously delivered self-expanding device with first and second sections positioned in left and right atria and a centrally located passage that permits blood flow from the left atrium to the right atrium. Dependent claims add an internal valve and specify valve opening behavior at a pressure differential threshold, as well as structural refinements.
Percutaneous self-expanding device with first and second sections across a septum opening
A device for treating a heart condition comprising a body adapted and configured to self-expand from a radially collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration, wherein in the expanded configuration the device comprises a first section and a second section, each having a first end and a second end, with the first ends of both first and second sections joining together, and wherein the first and second sections each have diameters that gradually increase with distance from their first ends toward their second ends.
Annular gap placement with midpoint-positioned first ends
The device in its expanded configuration has an annular gap between first and second sections of the device, with the first ends of the first and second sections positioned at a midpoint of the annular gap.
Centrally located passage permitting left atrium to right atrium blood flow
The body has a centrally located passage extending through the first and second sections, the passage having a diameter of about 4-15 mm, and the body is configured to be delivered percutaneously to a patient's heart and allowed to self-expand in an opening in a septum of the heart to dispose the first section in the left atrium, the second section in the right atrium, and the passage of the body to permit blood to flow from the left atrium to the right atrium.
Internal valve biased closed
The device further includes a valve disposed in the body, the valve biased to a closed configuration.
Valve opening at a pressure differential threshold
The valve is configured to open when the pressure differential between the left atrium and the right atrium is at least 2 mm Hg.
Braided mesh body construction
The body comprises braided mesh.
Septum engagement by expanded first and second sections
The first and second sections are sized and configured to engage the septum at the opening when the body is expanded in the opening.
Overall, the claim coverage centers on a percutaneously delivered self-expanding device that positions first and second sections in the left and right atria and includes a centrally located passage that permits blood to flow from the left atrium to the right atrium. Dependent claim refinements provide an internal valve that is biased closed and opens at a specified left atrium to right atrium pressure differential threshold, and further refine the device by braided mesh construction and septum-engaging sizing.
