Abstract

An rTMS coil or set of coils are designed to affect multiple regions of the brain with synchronous magnetic field pulses. Multiple coils aligned over the targeted regions of interest, or a single coil that is stretched or enlarged in a shape that allows the magnetic field to affect the areas of interest are disclosed. Also disclosed is a method of optimizing repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatments.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) device that delivers magnetic stimulation to two or more regions of a brain of a patient at an rTMS pulse frequency. The device is configured to promote coherence and synchronous behavior between multiple locations in the brain by synchronizing pulses generated by a coil configuration.

The rTMS pulse frequency is a harmonic or subharmonic of a non-EEG biological metric of the patient. The device analyzes recorded signals from the patient and determines, based on the recorded signals, a harmonic or subharmonic of the non-EEG biological metric, and then uses that determined harmonic or subharmonic as the rTMS pulse frequency.

The coil configuration comprises 2 or more coils, and each respective coil comprises an on/off switch. The device provides multi-coil synchronized magnetic field pulse delivery to multiple brain regions while using patient-recorded signals to set the pulse frequency as a harmonic or subharmonic of the patient’s non-EEG biological metric.

Claims Coverage

The independent claims cover an rTMS device with four inventive features: analyzing patient-recorded signals to determine a harmonic or subharmonic of a non-EEG biological metric, setting the rTMS pulse frequency to that harmonic or subharmonic, delivering synchronized multi-coil magnetic pulses to two or more brain regions to promote coherence and synchronous behavior, and including per-coil on/off switching.

Harmonic or subharmonic pulse frequency from non-EEG biological metric

The rTMS device analyzes recorded signals from the patient and determines, based on the recorded signals, a harmonic or subharmonic of a non-EEG biological metric of the patient, wherein the rTMS pulse frequency is the harmonic or subharmonic of the non-EEG biological metric.

Synchronized pulses to promote coherence and synchronous behavior between brain locations

Pulses generated by the coil configuration are synchronized and promote coherence and synchronous behavior between multiple locations in the brain.

Multi-region delivery using a 2-or-more coil configuration

A coil configuration delivers magnetic stimulation, at an rTMS pulse frequency, to two or more regions of a brain of a patient, wherein the coil configuration comprises 2 or more coils.

Per-coil on/off switching in a multi-coil configuration

Each respective coil comprises an on/off switch.

The core inventive elements are deriving a harmonic or subharmonic pulse frequency from a non-EEG biological metric determined from patient-recorded signals and delivering synchronized magnetic pulses with a multi-coil configuration to two or more brain regions to promote coherence and synchronous behavior, with per-coil on/off switching.
