Abstract
A method of enhancing the growth of an animal, as well as treating or preventing antimicrobial infections is provided. The method includes causing the animal to ingest or absorb an effective amount of one or more Fe III complex compounds, including but not limited to Fe III complexes comprising ligands bound to the iron center such as amino acids or α-hydroxy acids. The compounds are also useful for inhibiting, reducing, or preventing biofilm formation or buildup on a surface; the treatment of, inhibition of growth of, and inhibition of colonization by, bacteria, both in biological and non-biological environments; disinfecting surfaces, potentiating the effects of antibiotics and other anti-microbial agents, and increasing the sensitivity of bacteria and other microorganisms, to anti-microbial agents are also provided.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to reducing microbial infection or colonization in a mammal or bird by administering an effective amount of a dietary product comprising one or more iron compounds. The iron compound comprises an acid selected from alpha-hydroxyacid, amino acid, aminocarboxylic acid and diacid bound to iron, and the iron compound is present within a defined concentration range.
Fe(III) complexes are formed by binding acids to iron, including ferric lactate, ferric citrate, ferric tartrate, ferric glycinate, ferric EDTA, ferric malate, ferric oxalate, ferric quinate, ferric tyrosine, and L-DOPA complexes. The microbial reduction is directed at infection or colonization caused by microorganisms including Campylobacter and other bacteria.
The dietary product is described for mammals or birds and as a feed additive, with administration formats such as feed and drinking water. The document also describes coated surfaces and product applications where biofilm formation is inhibited or disrupted, and states that the iron compounds have the ability to potentiate antibiotics or reverse resistance.
Claims Coverage
The document identifies one independent claim directed to administering an effective amount of a dietary product to a mammal or bird for reducing microbial infection or colonization. The inventive features center on iron compounds where the iron compound comprises an acid selected from specified classes bound to iron, together with defined iron concentration ranges and dependent refinements to specific microorganisms and performance-related outcomes.
Dietary product administration for infection or colonization reduction
Administering to a mammal or bird an effective amount of a dietary product to reduce microbial infection or colonization.
Iron compound comprises an iron-bound acid selected from defined classes
The dietary product comprises one or more iron compounds wherein the iron compound comprises an acid selected from the group consisting of alpha-hydroxyacid, amino acid, aminocarboxylic acid and diacid bound to iron.
Iron compound concentration range in the dietary product
The iron compound is in a concentration range from 10 μM to 2 mM or 0.01 g/Kg of product to 20 g/Kg of product.
Reducing Campylobacter infection or colonization
A method according to the independent claim, further characterized by reducing Campylobacter in a mammal or bird.
Improving feed conversion, feed intake, weight gain and/or body weight
A method according to the independent claim, further characterized by improving feed conversion ratio, feed intake, weight gain, and/or body weight.
Overall, the claim set is centered on administering a dietary product containing iron compounds where Fe is bound to an acid selected from alpha-hydroxyacid, amino acid, aminocarboxylic acid and diacid, with the iron compound constrained to the stated μM–mM or g/kg ranges. Additional dependents refine the approach to Campylobacter and to animal performance-related improvements such as feed conversion ratio and body weight.
