Abstract

In accordance with the present invention, a novel method for improving the stool characteristics, reducing the incidence of diarrhea, and firming the stool of a formula-fed infant has been discovered. The method comprises administering to the infant at least one prebiotic and hydrolyzed pectin.

Core Innovation

The described invention relates to a method for providing prebiotics to a formula-fed infant while producing firm stool. The method administers to the infant a nutritional composition that includes a prebiotic mixture comprising polydextrose and galactooligosaccharide together with extensively hydrolyzed pectin and at least one insoluble fiber.

Extensively hydrolyzed pectin is characterized by a peak molecular weight of 3,300 or less. The insoluble fiber is selected from oat hull fiber, soy fiber, pea fiber, beet fiber, cellulose, corn fiber, or mixtures thereof, and the nutritional composition is formulated with specified amounts per 100 kcal.

The method also encompasses reducing the incidence of diarrhea in the formula-fed infant. In this aspect, the nutritional composition includes the same core components, namely polydextrose and galactooligosaccharide as the prebiotic mixture, extensively hydrolyzed pectin having a peak molecular weight of 3,300 or less, and at least one insoluble fiber, with quantitative ranges provided for the prebiotic mixture and hydrolyzed pectin.

Claims Coverage

The partial content provides two independent claims. Both independently cover administering a nutritional composition with a specific prebiotic mixture and extensively hydrolyzed pectin (peak molecular weight 3,300 or less) together with at least one insoluble fiber, for different infant outcomes (firm stool and reduced diarrhea incidence).

Providing prebiotics to a formula-fed infant to produce firm stool

Administering to the infant a nutritional composition comprising a prebiotic mixture comprising polydextrose and galactooligosaccharide, extensively hydrolyzed pectin having a peak molecular weight of 3,300 or less, and at least one insoluble fiber.

Providing prebiotics to a formula-fed infant to reduce diarrhea incidence

Administering to the infant a nutritional composition comprising a prebiotic mixture comprising polydextrose and galactooligosaccharide, extensively hydrolyzed pectin having a peak molecular weight of 3,300 or less, and at least one insoluble fiber.

Across the independent claims, the core claimed coverage is the administration of a nutritional composition containing a polydextrose/galactooligosaccharide prebiotic mixture, extensively hydrolyzed pectin defined by a peak molecular weight of 3,300 or less, and at least one insoluble fiber, where one independent claim targets producing firm stool and the other targets reducing the incidence of diarrhea.

Stated Advantages

Producing firm stool in a formula-fed infant.

Reducing the incidence of diarrhea in the infant.

Documented Applications
