Abstract
A stent (scaffold) or other luminal prosthesis comprising circumferential structural elements which provides high strength after deployment and allows for scaffold to uncage, and/or allow for scaffold or luminal expansion thereafter. The circumferential scaffold may be formed from degradable material, or may be formed from non-degradable material and will be modified to expand and/or uncage after deployment.
Core Innovation
The claimed expandable endoluminal prosthesis comprises a scaffold of circumferential rings patterned from a non-degradable material and configured to expand from a crimped configuration to an expanded configuration. Circumferential rings include struts joined by crowns and separation regions formed as breaks or gaps comprising a same-ring lock and key. The lock contains the key at least in part, and both are configured to remain held together during expansion and move apart or separate only after expansion in a physiologic environment.
A further claimed arrangement incorporates a second material configured to hold the lock and key together during expansion and provide a continuous circumferential path around the scaffold. Following expansion in a physiologic environment, the separation region separates to form at least one discontinuity in the circumferential ring. This separation enables circumferential uncaging, post-deployment expansion or contraction, and adaptive radial compliance while maintaining lumen support, showing increased maximum diameter, luminal area, stented-segment compliance, and vasomotion.
Claims Coverage
The independent claims cover two inventive features directed to expandable endoluminal prostheses having circumferential ring separation regions.
Same-ring lock and key separation region
Claim 1 covers an expandable scaffold of circumferential rings patterned from a non-degradable material, configured to expand from a crimped configuration to an expanded configuration, wherein rings comprise struts joined by crowns and a separation region having a break or gap with a same-ring lock and key. The lock contains the key at least in part, and both are configured to remain held together during expansion and move apart only after expansion in a physiologic environment.
Second material holding the lock and key together during expansion
Claim 4 covers an expandable scaffold of circumferential rings patterned from a non-degradable material, comprising struts joined by crowns, a same-ring lock and key, and a second material configured to hold the lock and key together during expansion while providing a continuous circumferential path around the scaffold. The separation region is configured to separate after expansion in a physiologic environment, forming at least one discontinuity in the circumferential ring.
The independent claims center on expandable circumferential-ring scaffolds with same-ring lock-and-key separation regions that remain joined during expansion and separate post-expansion in a physiologic environment, with claim 4 further requiring a second material that provides a continuous circumferential path during expansion before separating to form a discontinuity.
Stated Advantages
After expansion in a physiologic environment, the prosthesis provides sufficient strength to support a body lumen and low recoil from its expanded configuration.
Discontinuities increase maximum diameter and luminal area under pulsatile pressure compared with the control stent.
Experimental examples report increased stented-segment compliance and reduced compression strength after separation, with reported composite compliance increases typically of 200% to 500% and target radial compliance ranges of 1% to 5%.
Experimental examples report greater vasomotion in porcine coronary arteries than with a control stent.
Provides high radial strength at deployment and later increases compliance, permitting circumferential uncaging and further lumen or scaffold expansion while continuing to support the lumen.
Documented Applications
