Abstract
A Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator (TMS) is used by a patient to treat a variety of human disorders including migraine headaches. The device has an electronic device to charge a capacitor to a high voltage which creates a high current in a magnetic coil which produces an intense magnetic pulse applied to the patient's head for treatment of migraine headaches or to other patient body parts to treat other disorders. The TMS may be reprogrammed remotely over the Internet to add additional pulses or additional time that the patient may use the TMS, during which time the TMS would continue to function. The data in the TMS may be sent over the Internet to the patient's physician and/or to a monitor to send the data to the company that manufactured the TMS.
Core Innovation
A patient operated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device is provided for delivering a plurality of magnetic pulses to a patient's brain for treating migraine headaches. The TMS device includes an outer cover, non-volatile data storage, at least one capacitor for storing electrical energy, and an actuation magnetic pulse mechanism for initiating the magnetic pulses. The magnetic coil is potted in a plastic material and is located above a bottom of the outer cover.
The magnetic coil has a shape of a spherical sector, with a radius of its spherical surface between 8 cm and 14 cm. A patient prescription is stored in the non-volatile data storage, and the patient prescription contains one or more limit parameters that define allowed delivery. The TMS device is operationally disabled for termination of the magnetic pulses subsequent to exceeding at least one of the one or more limit parameters selected from a maximum number of pulses or a maximum time interval over which the magnetic pulses may be delivered.
A central computer server has server data storage for a plurality of the patient prescriptions and transmits the patient prescription through an internet circuit. The patient prescription is stored in the non-volatile data storage of the TMS device, enabling the device to enforce delivery limits based on the prescription. The device and server are arranged as a system for migraine treatment that uses stored limit parameters and server-based prescription provisioning through an internet circuit.
Claims Coverage
The provided independent claim defines a migraine treatment system with three main inventive areas: a patient-operated TMS device construction, prescription-based pulse limiting with operational disablement, and server-based delivery of patient prescriptions over an internet circuit to the device’s non-volatile data storage.
Patient-operated TMS device with potted spherical-sector coil geometry
A patient operated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device having an outer cover and containing non-volatile data storage, including a magnetic coil potted in a plastic material and at least one capacitor for storing electrical energy, with the magnetic coil located above a bottom of the outer cover and shaped as a spherical sector having a radius of its spherical surface between 8 cm and 14 cm.
Prescription-based limit parameters with operational disablement
A patient prescription stored in the non-volatile data storage containing one or more limit parameters, where the TMS device is operationally disabled for termination of the magnetic pulses subsequent to at least said one or more limit parameters being exceeded, the one or more limit parameters being selected from a maximum number of pulses or a maximum time interval over which the magnetic pulses may be delivered.
Central server transmitting patient prescriptions through an internet circuit
A central computer server having server data storage for a plurality of said patient prescriptions for transmitting said patient prescription through an internet circuit for storage of said patient prescription in said non-volatile data storage.
Across the independent claim, the system combines a patient-operated TMS device with non-volatile prescription storage and a potted spherical-sector coil geometry, prescription-defined limit parameters that disable the device upon exceeding allowed maximum pulses or delivery time, and a central server transmitting those prescriptions through an internet circuit for storage in the device.
Stated Advantages
Operational disabling of pulse delivery when prescription limit parameters are exceeded.
Documented Applications
Treating migraine headaches using the described transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) system.
