Abstract

The subject invention provides materials and methods that effectively support innate immunity and/or disperse pathogenic biofilms using readily available, nontoxic, natural substances, while supporting restoration of normal microbiotic homeostasis. In one embodiment, the subject invention provides anti-biofilm compositions comprising one or more probiotic organisms, anti-microbial honey, and other ingredients such as prebiotic compounds, other hive products, green tea derivatives, other plant derivatives, and vitamin D3.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a composition for oral consumption in which a biologically-active composition is obtained by growing biofilm cellular mass in a biological growth medium, rendering the biofilm cellular mass non-viable, and combining the non-viable biofilm cellular mass with an edible material to form an edible composition. The microbe is Lactobacillus.

The invention centers on using non-viable Lactobacillus-derived biofilm cellular mass as a biologically-active component within an oral edible formulation. The biofilm cellular mass is characterized as biologically-active and may provide antimicrobial activity and/or anti-inflammatory activity.

The invention additionally contemplates non-viable biologically-active biofilm cellular mass for oral consumption with an edible material, again with the microbe specified as Lactobacillus. The biologically-active biofilm cellular mass can include biosurfactant produced by the biofilm and may be combined with edible materials that include generally regarded as safe (GRAS) ingredients, as well as optional added components including prebiotics, hive products, plant derivatives, and vitamin D3.

Claims Coverage

The independent claims are directed to oral consumption compositions comprising non-viable, biologically-active Lactobacillus-derived biofilm cellular mass combined with an edible material. Across the independent claims, the main inventive coverage focuses on preparing the non-viable biofilm cellular mass and incorporating it into an orally consumable edible composition.

Non-viable Lactobacillus biofilm cellular mass in an oral edible composition

A composition for oral consumption comprising a biologically-active composition obtained by growing biofilm cellular mass in a biological growth medium, rendering said biofilm cellular mass non-viable, and combining said non-viable biofilm cellular mass with an edible material, wherein the microbe is Lactobacillus.

Non-viable biologically-active Lactobacillus biofilm cellular mass with edible material

A composition for oral consumption comprising non-viable biologically-active biofilm cellular mass and further comprising an edible material, wherein the microbe is Lactobacillus.

Overall, the claim coverage is centered on orally consumable compositions that include non-viable Lactobacillus biofilm cellular mass as the biologically-active component, combined with an edible material. Dependent refinements within the provided claim set further specify the type of biological activity and additional composition features such as biosurfactant, GRAS edible ingredients, and optional added components.
