Event Recap
Webinar Recap & Key Takeaways
Dr. Gene Olinger, Director of the Galveston National Lab (GNL), walked us through UTMB’s expansive capabilities—from foundational research to high-containment infectious disease work. Here’s a quick snapshot of what stood out:
World-Class Infrastructure: One of only two academic BSL-4 labs in the U.S., UTMB supports discovery, development, and licensure of countermeasures for high-consequence pathogens.
Unique Programs & Global Reach: From training NASA flight surgeons and supporting Antarctic medical operations to monitoring pathogens in ticks and mosquitoes, UTMB is deeply embedded in global health and biodefense.
Translational Strength: Their animal ICU program, AI-driven pathology, and Seeley Institutes for vaccines and drug discovery highlight UTMB’s ability to bridge basic science and real-world application.
Open for Collaboration: UTMB is actively seeking partnerships across diagnostics, MCMs, advanced modeling (e.g., MPS, organoids), and more. Their team can help shape proposals, co-develop tech, and accelerate innovation.
