Abstract

A device is provided for delivering a predetermined volume of at least one substance within a body cavity of a subject. The device contains a) a capsule for containing the predetermined volume of substances; b) a delivery end, having at least one orifice of diameter D, for placement in proximity to the body cavity; c) a valve mechanically connectable to the capsule, having at least two configurations: (i) an active configuration in which the valve enables delivery of the substances; and (ii) an inactive configuration, in which the valve prevents delivery of the substances from the capsule to the body cavity; and d) a fluid tight chamber configured to contain predetermined volume Vgas of pressurized gas at a predetermined pressure, Pgas. The capsule further contains at least one mixing mechanism that mixes the substances and the pressurized gas after the valve is reconfigured to the active configuration.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to an aerosol delivery device for delivering a predetermined substance from a capsule to a natural body orifice, including a nasal cavity. The device includes a valve having an inactive configuration in which no delivery is enabled and an active configuration in which delivery is enabled, and the valve reconfigures the capsule such that delivery occurs only after activation.

A fluid-tight pressurized-gas chamber provides carrier gas to enable aerosol generation. After valve activation, the pressurized gas entrains the substance and aerosolizes it through an orifice of diameter D. The capsule includes a mixing mechanism configured to mix substances and the carrier gas after the capsule is reconfigured by the valve.

The described embodiments emphasize adjustable and controllable dosing based on predetermined substance volume or predetermined amount, together with predetermined gas volume and orifice geometry. Multi-compartment capsules with compartment separators maintain separated storage and allow mixing only upon valve activation. The discussion further includes aerosol plume characteristics, including particle size distributions, plume angle, and particle velocities.

Claims Coverage

The claims cover the aerosol delivery device with a valve-controlled capsule reconfiguration and a pressurized-gas chamber for aerosol generation, with multi-compartment capsules and mixing after activation.

Valve-controlled capsule reconfiguration

A valve has an inactive configuration in which no delivery is enabled and an active configuration in which delivery is enabled, and the valve reconfigures the capsule such that delivery occurs only after activation.

Pressurized-gas chamber for aerosol generation

A fluid-tight pressurized-gas chamber provides carrier gas, and after valve activation the pressurized gas entrains the substance and aerosolizes it through an orifice of diameter D.

Mixing mechanism in the capsule

The capsule includes a mixing mechanism configured to mix substances and the carrier gas after the capsule is reconfigured by the valve.

Multi-compartment capsules with compartment separators

Multi-compartment capsules with compartment separators maintain separated storage and allow mixing only upon valve activation.

The inventive features center on valve activation, pressurized-gas aerosol generation, controlled mixing, and compartmented capsule storage.

Stated Advantages

Adjustable and controllable dosing based on predetermined substance volume or predetermined amount, together with predetermined gas volume and orifice geometry.

Documented Applications

Delivering a predetermined substance to a natural body orifice, including a nasal cavity.
